What to consider before you build your own gym at home
Working out is a true passion for many of us. For some, it became a true habit they practice daily. It can be convenient to go to a gym if you live near one and if your schedule allows it, but it’s not the case for everybody. Some may have trouble finding time for themselves and training may be a big-time commitment they can’t include in their routine. Those are the ones who need a gym directly in their house. It may seem overwhelming to accomplish such a big project, but if you follow the easy steps, it can be pretty simple.
1. Analyze the space available
The first step is to choose which room in your house will be your new gym and to measure how much space you have. You’ll have to consider the space taken by the equipment and the space you’ll need to move between your installations. The best is to have as much space as possible. A living room in a basement would be perfect for such a project. If you have adjacent chambers you’re not using, you can also consider taking down a wall to create a big room adapted to your needs.
2. Decide which type of training you want
The second step is pretty logical: you have to choose which training is the best for your goals, your space and your capacities. If you have a small room and you want an overall regular training, you’ll probably have to choose one machine for cardio (an elliptical trainer, a treadmill or a stationary bike, according to what you prefer) and some lifts and a mat to do basic muscular exercises. You can also consider including a television to distract you or to show some exercises you can do. If you have a bigger room, you have more options. For example, CrossFit is a trend these days because it’s a relay good overall work out. You can buy the CrossFit equipment you’re missing and practice it at home.
3. Make a budget
This step is often discouraging. Everybody has a different financial situation and a different amount of money they can spend on setting up a gym. A small budget can be an obstacle, but there are lots of secondhand equipment you can purchase for almost nothing. These can be a good start to make sure that you like training at home. When you’re sure, you can purchase new equipment one step at a time according to your budget. Some types of training aren’t adapted to secondhand shopping. If you want to do CrossFit, for example, you’ll need to buy new equipment, but even if it’s big investment, you should clearly consider it because it’s really efficient.
This step also includes the shopping in which you’ll have to consider a lot of options to make sure that your gym fits your lifestyle, your goals, your space and your budget.
