Subbuteo, Slots and Spurs Lingerie: welcome to the world of weird football products
If you’re a football fan born between the years 1945 and 1980, no doubt the word Subbuteo has you feeling nostalgic. You’re probably flooded by the memory of that Christmas morning you first opened your coveted ‘Club Edition Boxed Set’. Or maybe you think back to that magical moment you flicked the Subbuteo ball past your dad’s plastic goalkeeper and turned from a boy into a man.
But try explaining the joys of Subbuteo to a millennial and you’ll be met with some weird looks. Players stuck to giant weights you flick at a ball big enough to crush them, you say? Well, when you put it like that. . . I suppose I can see why Subbuteo seems strange, especially to a generation brought up playing FIFA and Pro Evolution Soccer on their Xbox and PlayStation consoles.
But Subbuteo certainly isn’t the strangest football product to hit the market. From the collection of bras, knickers and garters on sale in the official Spurs Shop (though obviously not as good as Man City one) to the football slot machines available at bgo, there’s a whole world of bizarre football products out there. Here are a few of the weirdest bits and pieces to use the beautiful game as a selling point.
