Thanks, Office Job! (No, Seriously.)

Work is usually my excuse for not exercising as frequently as I want to/should, but now my job is the reason I’m getting back into the swing of things.

I work in marketing for a newspaper and since we’re sponsoring the upcoming mud and obstacle challenges put on by Sqwish Sqwash, we got a sweet deal on the registration for a team. So $12 later, I’m all signed up for a 5-mile obstacle race.

Last night was the first time I could make it out to training with our team. And ooohhhhh boy. I am out of shape. Running a 5K with several stops along the way to do some strength and agility exercises was not easy. In fact, I was the slowest one out of our group of 5.

What??? Seven months ago I could run a half marathon. Apparently throwing in a couple of runs and trips to yoga in those seven months was not enough to keep me in shape. But, I finished it. Tonight I’ll tackle some stairs in a local stadium with my team.

With two and a half weeks before race day, I know I won’t be in shape in time for the big event but I’ll finish it.

Do you have any stories of getting back to the workout grind to share?

I took a (long, two year break) from the gym when I was taking grad classes after work, because I just didn’t have time to get there enough to justify the cost. But now that I’m done with school, I just signed up again last week!

My new gym has a pool, which I’m not sure I’m up for yet, but the first few times I went back I felt really out of shape, especially when I was on the treadmill next to a senior citizen working twice as hard as I was. Definitely need to dig in and get back to the grind!
