Tae Bo Is Back

20120524-180507.jpgMaybe you shouldn’t call it a comeback. Tae Bo’s been here for years. Tae Bo, of course, is the kickboxing workout that was popularized by instructor Billy Blanks in the 1990s. The workout is a combination of martial arts-inspired exercises, kickboxing, tai chi, and a few dancey moves.

I was “re-introduced” to Tae Bo when I picked up Best of Billy’s Bootcamp Fat Burners at a bargain price. The DVD features four previously-released workouts that range from 30 minutes to an hour. I had so much fun training with the ‘Billy Bands,’ which is a specialized resistance band. The bands come in a set of two. One end of the band attaches to the shoe, and the other is held in the hand. The bands are not included with the DVD. My set is not actually “Billy Bands,” but something similar I already had. This Reebok Resistance Trainer would probably work too. The resistance bands add some resistance training to the cardio mix.

Blanks’ latest video is Tae Bo Express. The DVD features eight workouts that are each about 12 minutes. There’s no warm-up or cool-down. The workouts are a challenging mix of cardio and resistance training, and the segments can be combined to create longer workouts. The workout requires no equipment. Because of the quick pace of the workout, this DVD is best for those already familiar with Tae Bo.

After completing Tae Bo, you’ll feel empowered and strong…but don’t go picking any fights.
