Love the gym but not the hassle? Now, you can get group fitness classes right in your home.
I tried Flirty Girl Fitness, a personal fitness company that offers live streaming and on demand classes via the internet through Flirty Girl Fitness LIVE. From their flagship studio in Toronto, three to five classes are streamed live every day. You can join a live workout. If you miss a class, they are also available for 24 hours to view on demand. Additionally, Flirty Girl Fitness LIVE offers you the chance to view approximately 65 previously-aired classes and eight studio recorded workout films on demand to view at anytime.
It’s kind of like the best of both worlds. You get the rotation and variety of classes from a gym membership, but you can do it all from the comfort of your own home.
Classes include workouts based on familiar trends like kickboxing, pilates, yoga, free weights, high-intensity interval training, and dance.
A sample week from the current schedule could include:
- Monday: Tabata
- Tuesday: Stretch Yoga
- Wednesday: Flirty Fight Club
- Thursday: On Demand Video Vixen
- Friday: Kickass Cardio
- Saturday: Bikini Bootcamp
- Sunday: Booty Beat
Other favorites to check out: Flirty Pilates, 30 Minute Express Abs, Chair Dance.
There’s a lot of variation in the intensity levels of the classes, and in most cases, the instructors are excellent about giving modifications. For example, “Video Vixen” is a good beginner class, while “Tabata” is high intensity intervals. The live classes are more intense than the studio recorded workouts. There’s also plenty of variety–from pole dancing to bootcamp to yoga. The live workouts change daily, so there’s always something new.
The classes are taught by many different instructors. All the instructors are women. The live instruction isn’t as polished as the studio recordings. You see instructors messing with their hair and taking water breaks. Overall, the instructors give great cues and are a lot of fun.
There are some drawbacks to at-home fitness classes. At the gym, the classes can utilize a lot of equipment that the studio has on hand that you don’t have at home. Workouts include tools such as yoga blocks, hand weights, gliders, and medicine balls. In many cases, the instructor will let the at-home audience know some modifications. But, sometimes you just can’t modify the workout for home users who don’t have equipment. I have yet to try any of the Pole Dance workouts because I don’t have a pole at home.
I have had very few technical issues with the service. From time to time, a class would cut off at the very end, so the cool down would be cut short. I wrote the Flirty Girl about the issue, and they responded promptly that the recording system is set up on a timer. So, from time to time, an instructor will start a little late or go a little long.
Speaking of timers, none of the workouts list the length of the session. Most of the workouts are an hour, with the exception of express workouts and a few of the studio recordings. While viewing a session, there’s no numerical timer. You can see about how far along you are in the workout from a progression bar, but it doesn’t tell you precisely how much more you have to go.
Obviously, if you don’t have a good internet connection, it can be frustrating to try to view these workouts. That’s not Flirty Girl’s fault, but it is worth noting if you are considering a online gym membership. The Flirty Girl LIVE website answers many technical FAQs.
A monthly subscription currently costs $15, and you can cancel at any time. That’s about the cost of a single workout DVD.
Overall, I’ve been very pleased with the service. I love getting the freshness of a variety of gym class workouts with great instructors, but I also love being able to do it all at home.
