Winter Warm-Up Interviews: Carpenter and Furcal

The Cardinals Winter Warm-Up is one of those types of events that you can’t really believe until you’re here. Downtown is basically painted red, which of course jumps out at you from the dreary winter background. I haven’t seen this many Cardinals fans in one place since the World Series celebration parade.

It. Is. Awesome.

As I go through the next couple days, I’ll do my best to let you guys know just how things are going.

So far today we’ve been lucky enough to get comments from both Chris Carpenter and Rafael Furcal.

Let’s start with Carp.

On this year’s team:

“There’s a lot of excitement about this ballclub. Tony and Albert leaving brought some questions, but I’m excited. I’m excited about the team, about Mike, about Waino coming back.”

On Albert:

“That’s the game. People leave. He should be praised [for what he did here], not beat up for it.”

On Waino:

“Everyone’s talking about Cy Young Adam Wainwright. I 100% hope that happens. If anyone can do it, he can.”

On his off-season workouts:

“I started throwing two weeks ago. My arm feels good. I normally start throwing right after the new year. Actually, my shoulder feels better now than it did last year.”

On Dunc leaving:

“He knows how I feel about him, his wife, and his family. He’s a special man. … He instilled so many things in a lot of us I don’t think we’ll ever forget.”

On Matheny:

“He’s a special man, a great leader. I’m not sure you can pick a better man to lead this organization.”

Now Furcal. He wasn’t in for very long, but seemed incredibly happy to be here.

When asked what he felt about the Winter Warm-Up:

“Well…..there’s a lot of people here.”

On his contract:

“I’m so happy to be back and be part of the St Louis Cardinals. I’m feeling so good and so happy to be here. I want to finish my career here. I love it.”

On Matheny:

“Mike’s a great guy. He knows about the game.”

On this year’s team:

“We’ve got a lot of guys who know how to play baseball. We’ve got a lot of guys who know how to get on base when we need it.”

On whether he’s going to steal more bases this year:

“Yeah, why not? If I’m healthy, and they give me the green light, I’m going. But you have to be on first base to steal bases. You can’t steal first.”

On Mark McGwire:

“He’s one of the best hitting coaches I’ve met. I can’t wait for Spring Training to work with him.”

Check back later for more updates! Waino is up next.
