South Carolina women’s hoops coach Dawn Staley was inducted into the Naismith Hall of Fame this weekend, which is certainly an impressive honor. Staley was a six-time WNBA All-Star, won three Olympic gold medals as a member of Team USA, and a fourth Olympic medal as a head coach for the team, and also medaled as a coach in the Pan-American Games and the FIBA World Championship for Women. After her playing days ended, Staley coached at Temple University before joining the Gamecocks in 2008. Since then, she’s built up a 92-66 record (overall as a college coach) and led USC to the NCAA Tournament twice.
Staley was one of 12 new members to enter the Hall of Fame this weekend. Her speech was genuine and emotional, with just a dash of humor mixed in. It made me cry, and that was before she even got to the part about Gamecock Nation and winning a national title one day. You can watch the full speech here:
Congrats to Coach Staley on this well-deserved honor!
