Phillies SWEEP Mets. That Always Feels Good.

Sweeping a team is always nice, but sweeping the Mets always feels just a little bit better.  Especially when that sweep happens under the bright lights in New York City (though only one of the games was actually under the lights.)

The Phillies sent Kyle Kendrick to the mound.  Now my distaste for Kendrick is well, strong.  If you would like to read about my dislike, you can find it here, and here (in poem form!!!) and here, oh and here.  So yeah, Kyle Kendrick is not, umm, liked by me.

Which is why the Mets should be completely embarrassed that he somehow held them only 3 hits, while pitching a Complete Game Shut Out.  For some reason, he pitched very well.  I posted on Facebook the following message:

I currently live in a world where Kyle Kendrick just pitched a 3-hit CGSO against the Mets and has the lowest ERA on the Phillies staff.

It was good knowing you guys enjoy the apocalypse.

And I truly believe it.  The Phillies have a staff of Cliff Lee, Cole Hamels, Roy Halladay and, as of right now, Kyle Kendrick has the best ERA.  That’s just wrong.

Today’s Episode of “The Idiot Behind Me.”

Be warned: if you go to a baseball game and sit behind (or in front of) me, you better know what you are saying.  If you don’t, then I will tweet out what you are saying and then post it on here for the world to see!

I have spent the last week in Florida.  In the 6 days that I have been here, I have gone to 4 Spring Training Games at 4 different stadiums and saw 6 different teams.  I have some fun stories about my nephew that will go up.

But today, I am going to focus on the Blue Jays/ Phillies game that I attended in Dunedin, FL.  Oh and my focus has nothing to do with the actual game, and everything to do with the idiot that sat behind me (in Tweet form!!)

And that was my day.  The Phillies lost horribly, but it was fun and since I decided to make fun of the guy instead of let him bait me, it was even more awesome.

Phillies: On Third Day Of Spring Training…

On the third day of Spring Training, the Phillies gave to me:

An optomistic Howard

Doc and Chooch Pressers

and

Pitchers, Catchers and a healthy looking Utley!

I can’t help but admire Ryan Howard’s optimism from his press conference yesterday.  He was energetic, upbeat and determined to prove others wrong.  Personality wise, he was the Howard of old, not the one of last year.   The Howard that sang “Take Me Out To The Ballgame” with Jimmy Rollins.

Howard sounded like he was going into the season to prove the doubters wrong.

Seriously Ruben?!?! Delmon Young?!?!

Now that it has been I few days, I have been able to process my thoughts.  Not sure that is necessarily a good thing in this case…

Ok, I get that the Phillies needed a right-handed power corner.  Then Ruben Amaro Jr signed Delmon Young.  He is NOT the right-handed power-bat that was needed.

There are a few reason why he is not:

1) A Power-bat was needed!

For the most people’s definition, a power-bat is someone that can hit a lot of homeruns.  Delmon Young hits some.  Last year he hit 18.  Umm…  Yeah, 18.  In 151 games.  Let’s put that into perspective: Ryan Howard hit 14 in 71 games,

Let’s look at his slugging next.  Young’s slugging was .411, Howard’s was .423.

Oh… umm… Ok.

How about On Base Percentage?  Young= .296,  Howard= .295.

So they are even there.

Walks?  Young = 20,  Howard = 25.

FUN!!

So why did I compare the two?  Ryan Howard is the epitome of a power-bat.  High strike-outs, but high power.  I used Howard’s numbers from last year because that was his worst year overall.

It was also to prove that a healthy Delmon Young does not even match up to an un-healthy Ryan Howard.
