Q & A Series Preview: Phillies/Rays

Tonight starts a re-match of the 2008 World Series!

Well, kind of, sort of.

I mean, the two teams are playing each other.  But the Phillies will not have Chase Utley or Ryan Howard on the field.

And the Rays will not have Evan Longoria.

But at least on Sunday we’ll have a Hamels/Price match-up and they both pitched in the ’08 World Series.  So that’s something!

Anyway, last night, Sarah Tyson, of Cowbell Clankers, and I exchanged questions to get us ready for the upcoming series.

What has been the biggest surprise for this season?

The biggest surprise, unfortunately, has been the way the injury bug has attacked. When your DL looks more like your starting lineup should, you know things could get rough.

Which player do the Phillies need to try to control?

Jeff Keppinger is a guy the Phillies might want to keep an eye on. He’s going to be back with the team for the first time since he broke his big right toe just over a month ago. Before his injury, Keppinger’s season was rolling right along. The Phillies might get lucky and see Matt Joyce out due to back pain. His OPS as of Thursday night was .899.

Going forward, what needs to happen for the Rays to win the division?

They just need to get healthy. Tampa Bay is still in the hunt, and we know they’re capable of going toe-to-toe with AL East foes.

With the trade deadline about 6 weeks away, are the Rays buyers, sellers or standing pat?

With so much uncertainty due to the number of guys on the DL, the Rays might need to stand pat at the trade deadline. The team should be able to get a bat back soon, and their pitching rotation is still strong. We all know they don’t have a lot of money to throw around anyway!

Check out my answers to these questions over at Cowbell Clankers.
