Phillies Finally Hit FM Radio

94WIP Sports Radio - CBSPhilly.com

An announcement was made yesterday that the Philadelphia Phillies have reached a multi-year agreement with CBS Radio that will allow FM’s 94WIP (Philly sports radio) to broadcast Phillies’ pre-season, regular, and post-season games.  I can’t even tell you how excited I am about this.  Though the games will also still be heard on AM’s 1210WPHT (just like last year), for a lot of us access to AM radio and/or finding a decent signal is limited and somewhat frustrating.

David Buck, Phillies Senior Vice President of Marketing/Advertising and Sales said via press release:

“1210 WPHT has a long tradition as the Phillies flagship radio station in Philadelphia.  We’re proud to continue the partnership and look forward to many exciting seasons ahead. We’re also thrilled to have an FM station broadcasting our games with the addition of SportsRadio 94WIP.” – CBSPhilly.com

The first game that will be heard on 94WIP will be on March 3rd, 2012, which is the Phillies’ pre-season opener against the New York Yankees.

Here is a little news from View From Section 116:

As of today, contributing writer Karilee Jeantet will be taking over as the senior writer for View From Section 116.  And I will be stepping down into the contributing role.

I have enjoyed writing for Aerys and the Phillies for almost a year now, so I put a lot of time and thought into this decision. But the time has come for me to take on a smaller role, by choice.

This decision was definitely made easier by the fact that Karilee is terrific and knows her stuff.  All you have to do is read her contributions to know she will make a wonderful lead writer.

So this isn’t goodbye, this is just a little blurb to let you all know of the change here.

Philly Villains – Who Are The Final 3?

Hannibal Lecter (actor Anthony Hopkins) - Wikipedia.org

Last night was the final episode of Philadelphia Comcast Sportsnet’s Philly Villains.  And I for one am sad about that.  This show was all kinds of awesome, so I really hope they do more like it in the future. Because it’s been an absolute blast to watch and write about.  To review the other 17 villains check out:  Part 1Part 2Part 3Part 4

Villain #3 – Former Toronto Blue Jay Joe CarterDate:  October 23, 1993  Location:  Sky Dome, Toronto, Canada  The Offense:  The Blue Jays were up 3-2 in the series but the Phillies had a one-run lead heading into the bottom of the ninth and all they needed was for Mitch “The Wild Thing” Williams to close it out and tie the series up.  Well, if you didn’t know what happened, it’s not hard to guess.  Carter ended up hitting a 3-run homer to not only win the game, but win the 1993 World Series.

And that moment crushed the hearts of all Philadelphia sports fans who had been craving a world championship.  The last one prior to was the 76ers winning in 1983. Have Phillies fans forgiven Carter?  Doubt it.  Check out the video below to either relive that dreadful moment or see why Carter is considered a Philly villain. You can also watch the CSN Philly clip here.

Villain #2 – Los Angeles Laker Kobe Bryant.  So what is Philly fans’ beef with Kobe?  Well, he attended high school in Lower Merion Township, Pennsylvania which happens to be a suburb of Philly.  He was never a Philadelphia 76er and it’s not like he pulled a J.D. Drew, because he was never drafted by the Sixers.  Kobe assured his villain status when he denounced that he ever lived in Philadelphia. And when he was asked where he was from, his reply would be…Los Angeles. OUCH!  That’s kind of NO-NO!

Granted Kobe grew up and lived all over the world, traveling with his father Joe Bryant, who was also a professional basketball player.  So Kobe didn’t reside in Lower Merion his whole life, so maybe it’s fair to agree with him on where he’s from.  And I think fans would respect that, had Kobe should have just kept his mouth shut about it.  But he chose to diss Philly and seemed to take great pleasure in sticking it to Philly fans. Watch the clip here.

Philly Villains – Part 4

Wednesday night’s episode (Part 4) of Philaldephia Comcast Sportsnet’s Philly Villains show continued with numbers seven through four, with a dishonorable mention thrown in for good measure.

Matthew Barnaby - greatesthockeylegends.com

Villain #7 – Former Buffalo Sabre (and other NHL teams) Matthew Barnaby.  The words used to describe Barnaby were punk and gnat.  He wasn’t a real big guy but he played like he was.  He also had an colorful personality that the panel described as cartoonish. And supposedly he rather enjoyed playing in Philly against the Philadelphia Flyers and would be extra pumped up hours before the game.

Many hockey players have lost their front teeth at one time or another, but Barnaby decided to replace his with silver ones that were adorned with the Sabres logo (see image on right). Watch the clip here.

Barnaby was arrested and charged with a DUI back in December 2011.

Villain #6 – the 2002 Tampa Bay Buccaneers.  And why would the Bucs be a villain when they aren’t even an NFC East rival?  Well what was slated to be one of if not the biggest game in Philadelphia Eagles history, and to be the last Eagles game to be played at Veterans Stadium turned into one of the worst.

It was the NFC Title Game and the Eagles were picked to take it all.  There were many reasons why the Eagles SHOULD have won that game, because basically the Eagles had everything working in their favor.  Right down to the cold weather where it was possibly hyped a little too much that the Bucs were NOT a cold weather team.  Something I always tell my son when he’s about to play a baseball game, do not ever take a team too lightly or underestimate your opponent.  And I think that is what happened to the Eagles.  Because what started off as amazing with the Eagles jumping to a 7-0 lead, 52 seconds into the game, turned into a complete disaster.

The Buccaneers went on to win 27-10 and found themselves Superbowl bound, while the Eagles lowered their heads and disappointed the 66,000 + fans at the Vet as well as the rest of Eagles fans.  Watch the clip here.

Dishonorable Mention – Former 76ers owner Harold Katz.  He was responsible for signing Shawn Bradley (Villain #15) so that is a HUGE reason why he got the nod here.

Phillies, Charlie & Pence Honored

On Monday, January 30th, both Phillies manager Charlie Manuel and right-fielder Hunter Pence will be honored at the 108th Annual Philadelphia Sports Writers Association Awards Dinner.

The Philadelphia Sports Writers Association (PSWA) dinner is one of the oldest continuing sports awards banquets in the nation, and annually attracts a Philadelphia sports “who’s who” list of guests, attendees, and award winners from all of the area’s professional sports teams, collegiate programs, as well as numerous sports writers, radio and television media personalities of note. – Pitchengine.com

Pence’s award is for:  PSWA Good Guy Award

Manuel’s is for:  Special Achievement (Phillies’ all-time winningest manager)

And the Philadelphia Phillies have been awarded Team Of The Year.

The banquet will be held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Cherry Hill, New Jersey.  Along with the awards ceremony, Philly-comedian Joe Conklin will be on hand.  And for those unaware of who Joe is, he’s a regular fixture on 94WIP sports radio and can imitate/mimic just about any Philadelphia athlete/personality and athletes/entertainers outside of Philly.  There will also be a silent auction of Philadelphia sports memorabilia as well as special guests.

Philadelphia Flyer Claude Giroux and head coach Peter Laviolette will also be honored.

Sounds like it’s going to be a fun evening, so if you are in the Philadelphia/South Jersey area, check it out.

Tickets to the 108th Annual Philadelphia Sports Writers Association dinner are $95 per person and available online at http://pswa.com. Tickets are also available by contacting the Philadelphia Sports Writers Association’s ticket chairman, Robbie Kenney, by phone at 609-702-7473 or by e-mail at pswadinner@yahoo.com. – PitchEngine.com

Blind Item: Which Philadelphia Athlete Did This?

While listening to 94WIP (Philadelphia sports radio), the host Glen Macnow told an interesting story about an unnamed Philadelphia athlete.  He did however state that the athlete was “well-known” but stopped short of disclosing the actual identity.

The story went like this…

A daughter of a friend of Macnow’s was recently at a Center City (Philly) Dunkin Donuts, standing in line while the unnamed ‘athlete’ stood in front of her.

A friend sent her a text message, which caused her phone to produce a beep (alert).  The athlete in question, turned around and hurled a presumptuous accusation at the young lady.  He said something to the effect of, “Can’t go anywhere without someone trying to take a picture.”

The young lady didn’t at first realize the man was talking to her and to be clear, had no idea who the athlete was.  She began typing a reply text when her phone made another beep.  The athlete turned around a second time and again accused her of taking a photo of him and seemed dumbfounded that she had the nerve to attempt another one.   He then went on to bitch about having no privacy.

The young lady tried to defend herself by actually showing the athlete her texts to prove she wasn’t snapping a picture.  He didn’t seem to believe her.  According to Macnow, the young lady is not a sports fan and honestly had no clue on who he was.

And let me say again that Macnow never stated who the athlete was or which Philadelphia sports team the athlete plays for.  And just because I’m writing this on View doesn’t mean this athlete is a Phillie.

But whoever it is, he was either having a bad day or has a HUGE ego!

By the way, Macnow’s co-host Anthony Gargano referred to the athlete as a major “tool” and regardless of who the athlete is, I have to agree.

Any thoughts on who the mystery athlete is?

Listen to Macnow and Gargano weekdays from 1-6 on Sports Radio 94 WIP.
