Happy 4th of July everyone!
I love being in Philadelphia for the “Welcome America” festivities (my favorite is Wawa HoagieFest,) and while there are great fireworks, the Phillies decided to put on a firework display of their own in New York City.
I have a confession to make: I listen to the beginning of the game and after the Phillies were down 2-0 I assumed that they were going to lose. I went in the pool, talked to friends, relaxed and had a good time.
When I took a break from swimming, I pulled out my phone to check the score and muttered “Let’s see how much they lost by today.”
Imagine my surprise when I saw that they won! And then I saw that Cliff Lee got the win and I was floored!
Cliff Lee was on his game. He scattered 7 hits through 8 innings, one of those was a homerun. He also had 9 beautiful strike-outs.
Chase Utley got the offense going in the top of the 7th with a 2-run blast to Utley’s Corner. Carlos Ruiz followed with his own solo-shot to left field.
Utley has been back 1 week and it is the second time that Chooch and him went back-to-back.
The Phillies added 3 in the 8th and 3 more in the 9th. It was the first time all year that they won when trailing going into the 7th.
Some of the Phillies’ players decided to have a little fun with Cliff Lee during his postgame interview:

Oh, and I heard something interesting that the Mets broadcasters said, it had a ring of truth to it. They said that while the Mets enjoyed beating the Phillies soundly on Tuesday night, they are not gloating to the Phillies about it. And while they are enjoying the Phillies being in last place, they will not say anything to them about it. The reason, the Phillies have won the NL East 5 years in a row, and they have beaten themselves this year. The Mets don’t want to wake a sleeping giant and give them a chance to rally together.
