Another day, and more Phillies roster changes. (Yes, it does feel like it happens everyday. It’s quite exhausting honestly.)
Out:
Jose Contreras elbow was ruined Friday night. ”The Big Truck” is done for the season, and quite possibly done for his career. He will have elbow surgery, but having the same surgery twice within 7 months of each other cannot lead be a good thing.
In:
Micheal Schwimer is back! He has allowed a lot a runs in his short first stint with the Phillies. So I’m sure he will help out tremendously this time. At least he’s good at pointing to the sky when someone hits a home-run off of him.
Out:
Erik Kratz was optioned back to AAA. Since he had about 2 AB’s the entire year, he won’t be missed. The best part of him being optioned means that the Phillies don’t feel the need for 3 catchers since Carlos Ruiz’ hamstring is feeling better.
Oh, and also they needed the roster sport for the other
In:
The Vanimal is back!!! Vance Worley was activated off the DL today. He will start tomorrow in place of Roy Halladay. It’s really good to have a strong pitcher back. I’m sure he’ll be on some sort of pitch count, but right now, that doesn’t matter. Right now, we have good news in the roster.
Rehabbing:
Speaking of good news, Chase Utley is headed to Clearwater tomorrow to begin Extended Spring Training. There is still no timeline for his return, but this is a huge step in the right direction. He has repeatedly said that he wouldn’t head to Florida until he was ready for the next step. My guess, it won’t be that many more weeks until we see him in Red Pinstripes in Philadelphia.
Jim Thome has spent the last couple days DH’ing for the Threshers, while Michael Martinez has been bouncing around the infield. Both players are steadily working on returning to Philadelphia. In the case of Mini-Mart, I’m not sure that is a good thing…
