Tune In Tuesday: Colorado Avalanche

I hear music playing in my head all the time. While it’s not quite every second of every day, it’s pretty darn close.

And I wouldn’t change it for the world.

Just like in the movies, I have a soundtrack for my life. Every event or interaction gets its own little theme. What’s even better is that I immediately link songs I enjoy to people, places, or events in my life.

Given my interesting brain, it should come as no surprise that there are songs I associate with hockey and the Colorado Avalanche. When I merge my brain with the brains of other fans, a cohesive soundtrack for our beloved yet frustrating Avs is created.

Without further ado, I present the 2011 edition of the Colorado Avalanche Soundtrack.

Note: While others suggested many of the songs below, unless noted, the reasons for their inclusion are mine.

Song #1: Artist in the Ambulance
Artist: Thrice
Suggested by: Katie Martinez
Reason: There is a lyric in this song that I absolutely love: “I’m still gonna try to do what’s right. I know that there’s a difference between slight of hand and giving everything you have. There’s a line drawn in the sand; I’m working up the will to cross it.” This song reminds me that I should give my all and be excellent in everything I do. My favorite hockey players are those who give their all every single night (hello, Philippe Dupuis). They aren’t always the flashiest or the sexiest, but they are the backbone of any team.

Song #2: We Will Rock You
Artist: Queen
Suggested by: Maggie Stillman
Reason: “They play it at every game to get people pumped up when it seems like they are bored or if the team needs some ‘crowd cocaine.’” – Maggie

Song #3: Can’t Stop
Artist: Red Hot Chili Peppers
Suggested by: Randy Kroeger @strictlyrandy
Reason: They play this song at a lot of games, and hearing a song at an Avalanche game is a sure way to link the two. But merely the first line, “Can’t stop, addicted to the shindig. Can’t stop, they say I’m gonna win big” reminds me of hockey. Regardless of how many times they break my heart, I am indeed addicted to the shindig.

Song #4: This is War
Artist: 30 Seconds to Mars
Suggested by: Christina Sonka, @Christina10_37
Reason: Any sport is a type of war. There are two sides, a winner, and a loser. In the case of hockey there are also numerous casualties along the way. Hockey is war. Maybe the Avs thought about that a little in the offseason.

Song #5: My Favourite Game
Artist: The BossHoss
Suggested by: Staffan @Elwood_Blues43
Reason: Well, hockey is our favorite game. And “I’m losing my favourite game” certainly applied to the end of the 2010-11 Avalanche season. Here’s hoping they hated that taste so much that they will come out guns blaring in a few weeks.

Song #6: My Own Worst Enemy
Artist: Lit
Suggested by: Randy Kroeger
Reason: Sometimes a team can’t win for losing. For this Avs, this was true for a significant portion of last season. Every bounce, every bit of luck, went against them. They truly became their own worst enemies many nights on the ice.

Song #7: Take the Power Back
Artist: Rage Against the Machine
Suggested by: Randy Kroeger
Reason: This is the song played at the Pepsi Center when the Avalanche are down by a goal or two. It’s meant to send a specific message: the Avs need to take the power back. Whether or not they actually accomplish this goal on a regular basis is up for debate. Last season they largely seemed content to allow the other team to hold the reins.

Song #8: Stiff Upper Lip
Artist: AC/DC
Suggested by: Randy Kroeger
Reason: After the Avs have given up a few goals in a row, and failed (in spite of our best attempts at empowering them) to score any themselves, it becomes necessary for fans to maintain a stiff upper lip. Be calm and carry on, so to speak. Or, you know, something less British.

Song #9: That’s Enough of That Stuff
Artist: The Fabulous Thunderbirds
Suggested by: Staffan
Reason: When the other team has scored several goals in a row, and there’s no end in site to the massacre (yes, February 14, 2011, I’m talking to you) there comes a point when the team just needs to put an end to the scoring. That’s enough of that out of you, visiting team.

Song #10: Haha You’re Dead
Artist: Green Day
Suggested by: Randy Kroeger
Reason: Everyone wants to cheer on their team. What’s almost (if not sometimes better) is cheering on the destruction of the opposing team. “I’ll be cheering that you’re going down,” indeed.

Song #11: Death March
Artist: Black Label Society
Suggested by: Randy Kroeger
Reason: After the apathy that seemed to plague the Avs in the last part of the 2010-11 season, it strikes me as appropriate that they find some fight. “Pray for war, pray for death, pray for hate, pray for all that you know.”

Song #12: Shots
Artist: LMFAO ft Lil Jon
Suggested by: Christina Sonka
Reason: This has become the go-to song when a team crashes the net and puts as many shots on goal as humanly possible. While the Avs didn’t do it often, you can bet this song played at Pepsi Center on those rare occurrences.

Song #13: Falls Apart
Artist: Hurt
Suggested by: Katie Martinez
Reason: Every time I sit down to watch an Avs game I do so with a certain amount of optimism. But over the course of the 2010-11 season more often than not my optimism met a crushing death. Everything seemed to fall apart, to the extent that I often wondered if I was crazy to continue to watch. As the song says, “I cracked my head and broke my heart.”

Song #14: Opiate
Artist: Tool
Suggested by: Randy Kroeger
Reason: I love Tool. A lot. And there are a bunch of reasons this song can easily be associated with the Avalanche. My favorite, however, is for the lyrics at the end of the song. Anyone remember the mind-numbing boredom that set in? Every game seemed to go the same way and there was precious little excitement? Well, the end of Opiate says “I’m bored.” Over, and over, and over again. Perfect.

Song #15: Loser
Artist: Beck
Suggested by: @JamielynnO
Reason: Sadly, this song choice should be obvious. The Avs could barely pull off a win following the All Star break, and ended the season second to last IN THE ENTIRE LEAGUE. Losers? Yes, by every definition of the word, the Avs were losers last season.

Song #16: Loser
Artist: Three Doors Down
Suggested by: Katie Martinez
Reason: They lost so often and by such large margins, the Avs deserve a soundtrack with BOTH songs of this name on it. Sigh.

Bonus Tracks:

Song #17: Another One Bites the Dust
Artist: Queen
Suggested by: @ljwoodworth
Reason: He’s a Red Wings fan at heart. Jerk face. (Just kidding. He’s actually a very nice guy…when he isn’t taunting Avalanche fans.)

Song #18: Love Hurts
Artist: Nazareth
Suggested by: Emily Robson @crazygirlemy
Reason: If you remained an Avalanche fan throughout last season, you know as well as anyone that love is a painful experience. Hello, my name is Katie, and I’m a masochist.

Song #19: Waiting For the End
Artist: Linkin Park
Suggested by: Katie Martinez
Reason: By the middle of March I was honestly ready for the Avs’ season to be over. They had simply pounded my emotions into oblivion. I needed recovery time. “Waiting for the end to come, wishing I had strength to stand.” That’s pretty much how I felt before every game. Also, the song acknowledges something the Avs are facing right now as camp is about to begin: “the hardest part of ending is starting again.”

Song #20: The Boys
Artist: Miss Jesse Lane
Suggested by: Miss Jesse Lane
Reason: This is an original song by a local artist. She is a HUGE hockey fan, and when I mentioned this soundtrack project she immediately suggested this song for the playlist, then made an Avs-themed video to go along with it. There is no end to the awesome in this situation. Like her Facebook page and follow this amazing woman’s career.

There you have it, folks…the definitive soundtrack for the 2010-11 Colorado Avalanche season. While I love a lot of these songs, I truly hope that this time next year we will be able to put out a list full ofwinning power ballads. Who’s with me?

Follow Katie and the Colorado Avalanche over at Hockey Without Oxygen. They are coming off of a rough season…they need all the love they can get.
