Now that we’re a full week into the 2012 Olympic Games, I thought I’d pass along a few things I’ve learned:
1. Apparently the wave is a worldwide epidemic. I was shocked to see the crowd start up the wave during a Misty May-Treanor/Kerri Walsh-Jennings match…in a relatively close game. Then, it got worse. They did the wave at WIMBLEDON. Is nothing sacred? Guess you really can’t blame them too much with British Royalty are also playing along…
2. I think I spent the majority of the gymnastics events trying to figure out how the women gymnasts get their ponytails that tight. The one that baffled me the most was Russia’s Aliya Mustafina.
Guys, I’m concerned that she’s going to get premature wrinkles from stretching her forehead that much. Bonus points for the glitter though.
3. I’m constantly amazed by the number of people who know very little about indoor volleyball. Every indoor match, there are a barrage of tweets asking “Why is that one girl wearing a different color shirt?” or “What’s that line on the court?” And the fact that Deadspin had an article recently on how shocked they were to see a girl kick the ball in a game and find out that was legal just amazed me. I guess not as many people paid attention to indoor volleyball during the 2008 Olympics or they simply forgot the rules? It’s too bad. Volleyball is a pretty awesome sport.
4. Cycling is quite possibly the most boring sport to watch on TV.
5. Could there be a cooler venue to play in than the beach volleyball venue?
Yeah, didn’t think so…
6. My favorite names from the Olympics: Destinee Hooker (USA Women’s Indoor Volleyball/Badass), Dong Dong (China Men’s Trampoline), and Yoshiie Takeshita (Japan Women’s Indoor Volleyball).
7. There are 2 different pronunciations of “Badminton”. Bad-min-ton if your British. Bad-mitten if your American. Go figure.
8. The swimming announcer sounds just like Charlie from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and I can’t unhear it.
9. It’s not ping pong. It’s table tennis.
10. Sports I didn’t know were Summer Olympic events: Trampoline, Hockey, Judo, Taekwondo, Sailing.
Bonus! I’m not sure why everyone is so focused on Ryan Lochte when Nathan Adrian is by far the most attractive US swimmer.
I mean, come on…
