Five Ohio State teams have been honored for APRs finishing in the top 10% for their respective sport. The sports honored are football, men’s and women’s tennis, and men’s and women’s volleyball.

Yes, football. This will come as quite a blow to those that love to speak of Ohio State as a football factory. There were only seven total schools from BCS conferences whose football teams were honored for their APR. Miami, Northwestern, Duke, Clemson, Rutgers, and Vanderbilt are the other six. Please note that the only other B1G school in this list is Northwestern. All academic smack talk from any non-Northwestern B1G school is now null and void. I’m looking at you, TTUN.

In case you are wondering what in the world APR is, well, it’s short for Academic Progress Rate. It is a measurement that monitors classroom performance of student-athletes on every Division I team. There is a minimum requirement of 930, which is a recent increase, that is being phased in. If a school falls below this level, they face sanctions.

For all of the negatives around Jim Tressel, this success is one thing that has his fingerprints all over it. We’ll see if they remain at the top in the new era. Of course, Florida never really had any problems in this area, so I have no reason to see a huge drop-off.
