Friday marked the end of the first week of full squad OTA’s for the Rams. The first time the rookies get to see where they measure up to the returning veterans. Because rookie camp was just that, a camp for just the rookies. The real gauge of whether these wide eyed newbies would make the team began this week.
But noticeably absent from Rams Park were draft picks WR Brian Quick (Appalachian State), RB Isaiah Pead (Cincinnati), WR Chris Givens (Wake Forest) and undrafted free agents P John Hekker (Oregon State), RB Nick Schweiger (Dartmouth) and TE Cory Harkey (UCLA).
Second round picks Quick and Pead and fourth round pick Givens were chosen to represent the Rams in this annual NFLPA (NFL Players Association) production.
Pead, Hekker, Schweiger and Harkey all attend higher education institutions that run on quarter systems and are not allowed to join the team until school exams are finished. So Pead couldn’t have been at OTA’s anyway. If if makes anyone feel any better Colts’ rookie QB Andrew Luck (Stanford) is also in the same boat.
So as the rest of the rookies meet and greet, study and work out with the team these rookies fall a bit behind on an already daunting task transitioning from the college ranks to the NFL. They are missing “some quality work” and it was “really great timing” as sarcastically stated by coach Jeff Fisher. But I’m hoping these guys are all very quick studies.
Next week we’ll be getting a look at the full squad. Woohoo!
