Rams Full Squad OTA Notes

May 2012 OTA's (Courtesy STLouisRams.com)

It’s the middle of May but by midday you could already get the feeling of the summer training camp weather that awaits the 2012 Rams.  Luckily for them pads weren’t required so the noon heat was bearable.  It will be a completely different and drenched story come July and August though.  Most of the rookies won’t know what hit them as they trudge through the thick wetness of a humid St. Louis summer.  Muhahaha.

Wednesday was the first day media was allowed to observe practice but it was actually the second day of OTA’s (organized team activities) for the entire squad.  Yes, the Rams were finally able to get together as a team.  Well, minus their defensive coordinator (cough, Gregg Williams, cough) and a few absent players.

Rams 2012 Draft Pick Profiles

Rookie Camp Huddle from 05/12/12 (Courtesy STLouisRams.com)

With their first rookie mini-camps under their belts the Rams 2012 draft class has officially begun their journey in the NFL.

According to Rams head coach Jeff Fisher the 40+ some rookies (10 drafted and undrafted rookies) arrived in St. Louis and went through what Fisher called an orientation.  He said “mini-camp” would imply the players were going at full speed and in shape – and clearly these rookies were not at that stage – but they are slowly but surely going to get there.

After Saturday’s practice Fisher said, “We were very impressed. Since we talked last, we had a three hour meeting last night and installed a bunch more offense and defense and then again did the same this morning. The offense came out and had a walk-thru. The defense did not. I thought both sides responded pretty well.”

Here are the draftee profiles as compiled by the Rams on their website (click on the player’s name for more info) and some of their quotes.  Enjoy and get to know the new kids on the block.

Pigskin Cover 3: EJD Roof, Scouting Changes And Bell Retires

Edward Jones Dome (Courtesy STLouisRams.com)

Although the full disclosure is not scheduled to happen until Monday we were given a small glimpse into the Rams proposal to the CVC via the local FOX 2 news.  Surprise!

When the teaser said something to the effect of “raising the roof” I had a feeling.  I had a bad feeling.  The more appropriate two R-words would have been “retractable” and “retrofit.”

Fox 2 Gets Exclusive Details On Dome Deal

Sources tell Fox 2 News that the biggest part of what the Rams want, involves tearing out the current roof on the dome and installing a retractable roof.

Construction experts have told us in the past that putting in such a roof would be almost impossible without major structural changes to the dome building itself, very expensive changes.

Since we don’t have all the details it is not certain what this roof make-over will cost other than it’s going to be more hundreds of millions.  *Dr. Evil voice…

My gut reaction to the news was that the Rams are asking for way over the top knowing full well that the CVC and the city would not and could not accept this specific proposal.  I hope I’m wrong.

I Love Football, Just Not For My Son

Rams OT Jason Smith. 10/23/11 (Courtesy of STLouisRams.com)

In years past my son has expressed interest in playing football but I’ve always managed to talk him out of it.  I found myself steering him towards safer sports such as swimming.  Right or wrong, that was the decision my husband and I made because we felt he was too young to fully analyze all the pros and cons.

But now he is old enough to have a chance at playing real tackle football.  He’s big, strong and intelligent – characteristics to get him noticed by the school coaching staff.  Organized football definitely has its redeeming qualities: discipline, life lessons and camaraderie amongst other things.  So am I amiss to secretly hope he’s not discovered?

Don’t get me wrong, as a fan; I love the game of football.  I love watching the game of football.  I spend countless hours on various football related activities – fantasy football leagues, Twitter, writing, etc.  Although I haven’t directly played the game it has changed my life for the better.  I wouldn’t be the female sports fanatic I am today.  I am very thankful for the blessings because of football.

Which brings me back to my title.  I love football, just not for my son.

Rams DE Chris Long Is #84 On 2012 Top 100 Players

Rams DE Chris Long Tebowing, 10/2/11 (Courtesy STLouisRams.com)

This is the second year the NFL Network has come out with their Top 100 Players as voted by the players.

The only Ram to make the 2011 list was starting running back Steven Jackson by landing at the #38 spot just one number short of his playing number, 39.

Things seem to be on rise for the Rams because they already have two players in the 2012 Top 100 and they’ve only unveiled #’s 80 – 100.  Newly signed free agent CB Cortland Finnegan lands at #93 and now DE Chris Long finds himself at #84.

As you can see he made a big leap in the number of sacks in the 2011 season.

Rams Mini-Camp Schedules Announced

Rams Camp 2011 (Personal Photo)

I have very fond memories of the above picture.  The Rams have not released a schedule for the 2012 training camp yet but here’s the next best thing: OTA’s and mini-camps.

According to NFL.com the following are the dates for the Rams’ OTA (Organized Team Activities) and various mini-camps.

May

11 – 13:  Rookies only.

15 – 16 and 18.

22 – 23 and 25.

June

5 – 8.

12 – 14.

Although, I have no idea whether any of these sessions will be open to the public.  My guess is that it’s not.  If I hear any differently I’ll let you all know.

Pigskin Cover 3: EDJ Lease, Brown To Jets And Eric LeGrand A Buc

Ignorance is bliss.  Not that Rams fans or the public have a choice in the matter.  For what it’s worth it’s probably a good thing.  Rams fans, who are used to the ups and downs that are associated with this team, would be taken on a motion sickness inducing roller coaster ride if we covered the play-by-play of the stadium negotiations.

The CVC and the Rams are doing the correct thing by keeping all this in house.

Rams Release Veteran Kicker Josh Brown

09/18/11 Rams Kicker Josh Brown (Courtesy STLouisRams.com)

When I read Josh Brown‘s 2012 salary would be $2.7 million the first thought that came to my mind was, “Uh oh.”  Players work their arses off to earn their big salaries only have it used against them later on.  Talk about a double edges sword.  Hardly fair.  I’d have to think Josh Brown saw his release coming at some point though.  Then again, maybe not.

This was a tweet from Thursday, the first day of the 2012 draft.

Again, “Uh oh.”

Here is what Coach Fisher said Saturday, April 28, when asked about the Greg Zuerlein pick in the 6th-round.

This means Josh Brown will be released tomorrow.  He’s already been informed of that.  Josh was a great kicker and is tremendous here in the community and has got deep roots here.  I spoke with him immediately after the pick, and he understands.
