Free Agency Fun: Packers Version

photo from bleacherreport.com

This time of year for football is the most exciting part for me outside of the actual season with everything from free agency and the use of the  franchise tag, and I love the anticipation that comes with it. (Free agency is set to start Tuesday, March 12 at 4 p.m. eastern time…yes I am counting down the minutes!)

Last week, the Packers opted out of using the franchise tag on WR Greg Jennings. As much as I love Greg, it really does make perfect sense to me. First of all he isn’t getting any younger, but more importantly, Aaron Rodgers has a lot to work with that doesn’t include Jennings. With WR’s Jordy Nelson, Randall Cobb, and James Jones, in addition to TE Jermichael Finley, there are still a great amount players to work with on offense.

And when it comes to free agents, RB Steven Jackson from the St. Louis Rams is a name that we keep hearing in association with the Packers. Although nothing has been said by Jackson or the Rams on if he is staying, going, or what his situation is, he is continually being linked to either the Atlanta Falcons or Green Bay Packers.

With the release of Michael Turner from the Falcons, that would leave room for Jackson, but Green Bay could use the extra help at RB . If Green Bay were to take that route, they would have to pay Jackson the $7 million he is set to make in the last year of his contract. Coming from someone who has lived their entire life in St.Louis and lived through the Steven Jackson era, he is most definitely a player that any team would be happy to have on their roster. In addition to having 8 consecutive seasons of over 1,000 rushing yards, his work ethic, drive, and ambition is through the roof. He is a truly talented player and works so hard to achieve greatness. He has said he wants to play for a winning team and get a ring, and Green Bay just may be a place to get that done!

Packers Get Win Over Rams, 30-20

Today the Green Bay Packers traveled to St. Louis to take on the Rams, and let me tell you, they brought their entire fan base with them.

Living in St. Louis, I go to more Rams games than anything, but today at the Edward Jones Dome, you would have thought you were at Lambeau Field. It was a sea of blue, green, and gold. And more than a couple of times throughout the game, you could here chants throughout the dome of “Go Pack Go”.

Never have I been to a game where the opposing team made so much noise. There was a ton of energy throughout the game though, making it a great atmosphere for fans, including some great friendly rivalry from the stands.

Once again, Jordy Nelson stepped up as Aaron Rodgers go to man. With 8 receptions and 1 touchdown, Jordy had another great game. Randall Cobb came away with 2 touchdowns as well. Another notable play was the Casey Hayward interception off Sam Bradford in the 3rd quarter. And of course, Clay Matthews another sack this game.

So the Packers come away from the game today with a 4-3 record. They will host the Jacksonville Jaguars at Lambeau next week.

The Pack Is Back

I knew going into this game that Green Bay would somehow be able to pull off a win against the undefeated Houston Texans, and they did just that. 42-24 was the final score from Reliant Stadium.

With 6 touchdown passes from Aaron Rodgers (tying the team record), the offense was on fire tonight. And the connection between Rodgers and Jordy Nelson was awesome. Jordy accounted for 3 of the touchdowns tonight, James Jones with 2, and Tom Crabtree with 1.

The key to the game tonight though was being able to stop the run game (Arian Foster) and the Texans offense as a whole, and they were able to do that  tonight as well. Foster did have some really good runs, including one for 80 yards, and scored 2 touchdowns, but I was very impressed with the Packers defense tonight as a whole, especially without B.J. Raji. And to top it off, Casey Hayward and Sam Shields each intercepted Matt Schaub in the second half.

Tonight the Packers impressed more than they have all season, obviously. There was a lot of pressure on the Packers tonight going into a game against an undefeated team, but they remained poised, and went out there and got the big W. Talk about a great win! Next week, the Packers will head to Missouri to take on the 3-3 St. Louis Rams. Being from St. Louis, I will be there as well, and couldn’t be more excited!

Green Bay Signs TE DeMarco Cosby

Cosby at Central Missouri.

Today it was announced that the Packers had signed TE DeMarco Cosby.

DeMarco was a non-drafted free agent who spent last season with the St. Louis Rams. He played at the University of Central Missouri and is their all time leader among tight ends in receiving TD’s, receiving yards, and receptions.

Being from Missouri, this is extra exciting for me!

I can’t wait to see what Cosby can bring to the Packers and I wish him the best of luck! He will be wearing number 46.

Also, show DeMarco some love on Twitter and give him a follow or shoutout. @coz84

Green Bay Signs Two Former Colts

Photo from biographyplayers.com

Former Colts C Jeff Saturday is headed to Green Bay!

The Packers traded C Scott Well to the St. Louis Rams, and now has the 13 season veteran on the roster. So far in his career Saturday started 188 games, all in Indianapolis.

He signed a two-year deal with the Packers worth 7.75 million, including 4 million this season.

In addition to signing Saturday, Green Bay also picked up former Colts DT Daniel Muir.

Muir was with the Colts from 2008-2011 and had 26 starts. Muir entered the league as a non-drafted free agent with Green Bay in 2007 before spending the next four seasons with the Colts.

And as a side note, the official Green Bay Packers website and Sports Illustrated  have teamed up to create this amazing slideshow of all the previous Green Bay cover stories. Click here to see it for yourself. It’s definitely something that you don’t want to miss, and that any Packers fan will truely enjoy!

What About Flynn?

While every football fan in America is waiting around for Peyton Manning to make his decision about what team he is going to play for and how that will affect their team, the Matt Flynn situation has been somewhat overlooked…but today that may have changed.

There has been constant talk of Manning visiting and talking to Arizona, Miami, Tennessee, and Denver, but today it was announced that the 49′ers are just as interested in him, and that Miami is pretty well out of the mix, according to ESPN’s Adam Shefter.

Miami however, is one of the teams that Matt Flynn may very well end up at. To me that makes the most sense, but Flynn has also been meeting with the Seattle Seahawks. But with Miami not a front runner for Manning, it could definitely end up being Flynn’s new home.

Also today Packers former Pro- Bowler, center Scott Wells, signed with the St. Louis Rams.

Of course any team should be proud to sign Flynn or Wells, but Green Bay has been pretty quiet thus far during free agency…but when you think about it, you can’t blame them.

They were the champs of last years Super Bowl XLV, and went 15-1 on the regular season this past year…definitely nothing to complain about.

Although Green Bay hasn’t made any huge moves yet during free agency, it’s not over…so for now just sit back and enjoy watching other teams negotiate, sign players to huge contracts, and soak in all the exciting things happening around the league.

Taking A Look Around The League

There have been many interesting things happen this week throughout the NFL, and they will all affect the upcoming season.

Last night, it was reported that the St. Louis Rams will trade their #2 pick to the Washington Redskins. The Redskins will then be able to draft Baylor’s RG3, and the Rams will get 3 first round picks out of the deal, leaving the faithful St. Louis fans rejoicing.

Peyton Manning was also released from the Indianapolis Colts after 14 seasons earlier this week. He has since met with the Denver Broncos, Miami Dolphins, and is meeting with the Arizona Cardinals tonight. In my opinion, Peyton will end up being a Cardinal for the next season, and Matt Flynn could possibly head to the Dolphins. Nothing has been said or decided yet, that is just a scenario I could see.

Mark Sanchez also got a contract extension with the New York Jets, making that a team that will be out of the question for Manning.

And Packers fan, I have not forgotten about you! Brett Favre’s twitter account that we were all so excited about following and keeping up with has been hacked….let’s figure it out Brett. We want you on Twitter!

Also, here is a list of a few free agents that the Packers may pay a little bit of attention to. Free Agency begins on Tuesday!
