Datone Jones To Green Bay

And with the 26th pick in the 2013 NFL draft, the Green Bay Packers selected Datone Jones, DE, of UCLA.

Congratulations Mr. Jones and welcome to the Pack. Aaron Rodgers even decided to send a warm welcome to the new Packer in his own way via Twitter. Too funny, Aaron.

Green Bay Trades Up, Gets Two Picks In 2nd Round

photo from mlive.com

In the second round of the 2012 NFL Draft, the Packers traded up from 59 to 51 to draft DT Jerel Worthy of Michigan State.

In order to move up, the Packers gave up their 4th-round pick, 123 overall, to the Philadelphia Eagles.

Jerel seems quite excited to be a part of the Green Bay Packers team, which is definitely a plus!

Yep, he said it. I ’m lovin his enthusiasm!

The Packers also received New England’s 2nd-round pick, 62, giving up their 3rd and 5th round picks to the Patriots.

And with that trade, the Packers selected DB Casey Hayward from Vanderbilt.

Congratulations to both of these players on becoming the newest members of the Pack, and more analysis on them to come.

Packers Draft Preview

Only 2 days remain until Round 1 of the NFL Draft! We have been counting down for quite a while but the day  is almost here! Yes, I am very excited. This is by far the best time of the offseason.

First, let’s take a look at the picks the Packers will have in this years draft.

  • Round 1: 28
  • Round 2: 59
  • Round 3: 90
  • Round 4: 123, 132, 133
  • Round 5: 163
  • Round 6: 197
  • Round 7: 224, 235, 241, 243

Something extra special about the draft this year for Green Bay is that former safety, LeRoy Butler, will announce the Packers second round pick Friday night.  According to Green Bay’s official website, LeRoy wanted so badly to be invited to New York City for the Draft in 1990 after his college career at Florida St., but never received the call. Now, he will finally have his opportunity to take the stage at Radio City Hall during the draft. So excited for him! You can check out LeRoy’s full article and see his thoughts on being a Packer here.

As I’ve said before, the top needs for Green Bay in the early rounds of this draft are OLB/DE. No doubt that is what they’re going to go with for Round 1. There still is a lot in question though when thinking about  who the player they select will be. It all depends on who is left when the 28th pick rolls around. I still say Nick Perry is a very reasonable choice, but I’m also leaning toward Whitney Mercilus, Illinois, quite a bit now. You also have Andre Branch, Clemson, and Shea McClellin to take into consideration as well.

We will find out soon enough though! GO PACK GO!!!

The Packers Receive Four Compensatory Draft Picks

Today Green Bay received the fabulous news that they will be awarded four compensatory picks in the draft this year.

The whole concept of the compensatory picks can get somewhat complicated, so I’ll leave Duke Bobber, blogger for the Packers official website, to explain. He said,

” Under the rules for compensatory draft selections, a team losing more or better compensatory free agents than it acquires in the previous year is eligible to receive compensatory draft picks. The number of picks a team receives equals the net loss of compensatory free agents up to a maximum of four.”

Hopefully that helps explain what’s going on.

Basically,  because of  the four free agents Green Bay lost last year without signing others to replace them, the league is giving them these draft picks.

They will receive two picks in the 4th round and two picks in the 7th round.  Overall, numbers 132, 133, 241, and 243 to be exact.

Doesn’t sound like a bad idea to me at all. A free draft pick is a free draft pick…..we’ll take it!

The QB Controversy

Yesterday the Seattle Seahawks got their QB, and yes it was non other than Aaron Rodgers back up man, Matt Flynn. He may not have gotten the biggest contract, but at least he is now able to have his own team to lead. Welcome to the NFC West Mr. FLynn.

Flynn’s deal with Seattle is for 3 years, and $26 million, $10 million guaranteed.

Flynn had a visit with the Miami Dolphins as well, but chose the other team….seems to be the trend around the league.

Miami wasn’t able to convince Peyton Manning to come to play for them, and now they have missed out on Matt Flynn. Forgive me for saying this because I know every team plays every game with the goal of a win, but perhaps they wish they had a higher draft pick this year so they could draft a new QB? :)

With that being said, news was just released moments ago that Peyton Manning is now a Denver Bronco. That brings up the question of where Tim Tebow will end up for next season. Maybe Miami can work something out with him? Alex Smith of the 49′ers is still in question for the Dolphins as well. Needless to say, Miami will figure it out and get their QB, and Tebow will be a great addition to whichever team he end up with. Yes, he has some things he needs to work on, but I’ve supported the kid through it all and with his excellent leadership skills and high character, he’ll find his place.

But back to Flynn, he did play one game for Green Bay this season and put up some excellend stats, and I know Seattle is going to be very happy with their new additon. I think Aaron Rodgers and Seattle Head Coach Pete Carroll completely agree.

Green Bay and Seattle will in fact meet each other this season at Seattle. And according to Vic Ketchman, it will be a great game to watch.

It’ll be a very high profile-game for Packers fans. Whether or not it’s a game of national interest will depend on where it fits on the schedule and how Matt Flynn is performing when the two teams meet.

Taking A Look Around The League

There have been many interesting things happen this week throughout the NFL, and they will all affect the upcoming season.

Last night, it was reported that the St. Louis Rams will trade their #2 pick to the Washington Redskins. The Redskins will then be able to draft Baylor’s RG3, and the Rams will get 3 first round picks out of the deal, leaving the faithful St. Louis fans rejoicing.

Peyton Manning was also released from the Indianapolis Colts after 14 seasons earlier this week. He has since met with the Denver Broncos, Miami Dolphins, and is meeting with the Arizona Cardinals tonight. In my opinion, Peyton will end up being a Cardinal for the next season, and Matt Flynn could possibly head to the Dolphins. Nothing has been said or decided yet, that is just a scenario I could see.

Mark Sanchez also got a contract extension with the New York Jets, making that a team that will be out of the question for Manning.

And Packers fan, I have not forgotten about you! Brett Favre’s twitter account that we were all so excited about following and keeping up with has been hacked….let’s figure it out Brett. We want you on Twitter!

Also, here is a list of a few free agents that the Packers may pay a little bit of attention to. Free Agency begins on Tuesday!

Looking Ahead To The Draft

I’ve got the NFL Draft on my mind, and can’t wait to see which teams all these young, talented players end up to fulfil their NFL dreams. I’ve always been overly excited for the draft, but it’s a great time to see what talents these players coming out of college really possess and where they would fit in at the best.

As for Green Bay, personally I believe all eyes should be on the defensive side of things when looking for their first round pick. Corners have always been such a position of importance in my mind, but no one can be sure who Green Bay ends up with, until the big night in April.

Green Bay will have the 28th overall pick in the draft this year. According to various mock drafts, the Packers could be looking at a number of different positions to fill will their first round pick, and again all of them refer back to their defense. Taking a look back at Green Bays picks in the first round the last few years, I’d say they know what they’re doing.

  • 2005: QB Aaron Rodgers, California
  • 2006: LB A.J. Hawk, Ohio State
  • 2007: DT Justin Harrell, Tennessee
  • 2008: Trade to New York Jets
  • 2009: NT B.J. Raji, Boston College; LB CLay Matthews, USC
  • 2010: T Bryan Bulaga, Iowa
  • 2011: T Derek Sherrod, Mississippi State

You can catch the 1st round Thursday April 26, rounds 2 and 3 on Friday April 27, and rounds 4-7 on Saturday April 28, all on prime-time TV. Click here for details on all 32 teams and complete mock drafts.
