Kings New Additions

Yesterday the Kings decided to not only bring in a fresh face, but to also keep a few smiling faces around. Jarret Stoll and Colin Fraser were both signed to multi-year contracts by the Kings. I am one happy camper, because without that unbelievable game winning goal by Stoll against Vancouver we might never have held that shiny cup!

The newest member of the Stanley Cup Champion Kings is Tanner Pearson from the Barrie Colts (OHL). Pearson was the final selection of the First Round, which means that the Columbus Blue Jackets will be taking the Kings 1st Round pick in the 2013 Draft.

This is the 3rd year Pearson has been eligible for the Draft, clearly this has been a long time coming for him! Unfortunately with the re-signing of Fraser and Stoll, there is not a lot of room for another Center in the line-up. Pearson is listed as a LW, but has said that he is a true center that has spent a considerable amount of time as a RW. Nonetheless this talented individual will get his opportunity soon!

Draft Day Round 2 the Kings selected:

LW Nikolay Prokhorkin (18) in the 4th Round (121st overall), from CSKA Moscow of the KHL.

D Colin Miller (19)  in the 5th Round (151st overall), from Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds of the OHL.

RW Tomas Hyka (19) in the 6th Round (171st overall), from Gatineau Olympiques of the QMJHL.

D Paul Ladue (19)  in the 6th Round (181st overall), from the Lincoln Stars of the USHL. *A Bemidji, MN Native!*

D Nick Ebert (18) in the 7th Round (211th overall), from the Windsor Spitfires of the OHL.

The Kings traded the 183rd selection (seventh round) to the Stars for Dallas’ seventh-round selection in 2013.

Stoll Shoots The Kings Into Round 2!

The Los Angeles Kings emerge victorious in Rogers Arena, from a Jarret Stoll goal in overtime! The final score was Kings 2 Canucks 1SEE YA SEDIN’S!!!

The Canucks already have Tee Time's

Once again Jonathan Quick was the difference maker, shutting down numerous scoring opportunities. I also have to give Cory Schneider props he did a great job taking over for the always brutal Roberto Luongo!

Like I said before the Kings are dangerous defensively, but I do not think they played up to their full potential the last two games. Hopefully they can take this time to recompose and take down another top seeded team. The Kings will be facing a relatively inexperienced St. Louis Blues team, this has the potential to be a great series with a lot of young talent on the ice!

The most important thing is the Kings are on to the next round and the Canucks will once again not be raising the Stanley CupSorry Canada hold out for Ottawa.

No Looking Back!

The Los Angeles Kings fire back in a big way with a  5-2  win tonight, against the Detroit Red Wings! The scoring nearly started with Jarret Stoll when he split the D and tried to put the puck low past Jimmy Howard, unfortunately Howard was there to make the save. A few minutes later Howard shut the door again when he stacked the pads on a Jeff Carter attempt. The Kings continued to buzz the net and it paid of when Dustin Brown got the puck to Drew Doughty who was able to get the puck on net so that Justin Williams could bang it home!

STAT ALERT: Brown has extended his point streak to 9 games!

Minutes later during a Wings power play Anze Kopitar catches Howard slightly off his angle and snipes. Adding to another impressive Kings statistic they have successfully killed 32 consecutive penalties. Go Defense! The Wings took advantage of a neutral zone mistake by Williams and made it a 2-1 game. Henrik Zetterberg made a great move selling the shot to Jonathan Quick giving Jiri Hudler a great look at the net for the score.

Mike Richards goal at 9:03 of the 2nd period was HUGE the Kings were running around and needed to get the control back and Richards goal did that. I truly believe that a 2 goal lead is the worst in hockey, but I would much rather go into the 3rd 3-1 than 2-1! For good measure Slava Voynov added a power play goal, but if fans learned anything from the last Kings vs Wings game is that it’s not over until the fat lady singsJohan Franzen tried to bring the Wings within striking distance, but it just was not enough. The Kings killed off key penalties, scored big goals and kept their composure in the 3rd period. All in all it was a great night at the Staples Center!

The Kings are now in a 4 way tie for 8th place! More playoff updates to come tomorrow!!

Brown Steals the Show with Hat Trick

3 for the money 1 for the show! (Bridget Samuels/Flickr)

The Los Angeles Kings shutout the Chicago Blackhawks 4-0 Saturday at the Staples Center. During a second period bench interview Kings Captain Dustin Brown put it best “1 goal or 4 goals doesn’t matter as long as we get 2 points.” Dustin I could not put it better myself, and tonight the Kings played hard from start to finish for those 2 points.

Brown had a hand in each of the Kings goals tonight against the Blackhawks, scoring 2 in the first period and one in the second to finish off his natural hat trick. Brown’s 3rd goal came off a pass from Willie Mitchell chipping it up to Brown for a short-handed goal. A few minutes later Brown returns the favor and Mitchell navigated traffic putting the puck past an unsuspecting Corey Crawford. Great to see Mitchell grace the score sheet after getting a two-year extension from the Kings.

Crawford was pulled and Ray Emery took position between the pipes and finished the game strong in net for the Hawks. Although the Kings didn’t get any past Emery they definitely did not take their foot off the gas. The Kings had great opportunities and hit a few pipes, but the scoring chances were there! 2 other Kings with great performances tonight were as always the talented Jonathan Quick making 19 saves to secure tonights shutout (7th of the season, leading NHL) and Jarret Stoll with 3 assists, playing an instrumental role in the Kings offense tonight. Jeff Carter was a bit overshadowed by his new teammates tonight but I’m sure he didn’t mind since they got the 2 points they wanted!

Tonight was a statement by the Kings - they may be down but they are certainly not out, and the race for a playoff position is certainly on! The Kings are back on track, currently in 9th place with 68 points right behind the Dallas Stars. The Kings go on the road tomorrow to play the Nashville Predators, and I am sure there will be plenty of trades by the time the final buzzer sounds…
