Flying Through the Headlines: Who brings a taser to a football game?

Two big Jets related headlines this morning. One is a terrible story about a fan who brought a taser into MetLife stadium on Sunday Night, another celebrating the Jets excellent use of Social Media.

Sanchez and the Jets make the cover of this weeks SI, which features an article on the Ryan brothers

Fan Uses Taser as Violence Breaks Out a Cowboys-Jets Game: The horrifying trend of stadium violence continued at the Jets game on Sunday when Leroy McKelvey  (wearing a Cowboys jersey) brought a stun gun into Metlife Stadium and tased 3 fans, one of which was a marine.

Here is a link to the Deadspin article which includes video of the fight. (And here is my obligatory warning about the language used in the video).

The Jets Social Media Takeoff: The Jets have become a leader in social media. The team has reached record numbers of Facebook Fans and Twitter followers and generated a ton of buzz online during an offseason slowed by the lockout.

The team has even implemented a social media strategy, with rules for the players on the “do’s and don’ts of Twitter” and seminars at the beginning of each season. That, combined with the organizations efforts to use social to further the “brand”, has tremendously grown the fan base.

The team has worked with social media expert Gary Vaynerchuck (follow him on twitter, @GaryVee) in coaching the players and the team about how to lead the way and set the standard for social in the NFL.

One thing you can not expect from the Jets and their social media presence? Seeing Rex Ryan on Twitter. He has said he will not join.

A few other notes:

  • According to Jenny Vrentas’ Twitter, the Jets raised almost $80,ooo for charity with 9/11 commemorative NYPD, FDNY & Port Authority hats.
  • Rosenhaus Sports has signed Jets TE Dustin Keller according to their Twitter. I’ll spare a diatribe about my personal opinion of Rosenhaus but congratulations to Dustin Keller.
  • Rex Ryan did not give a game ball to any of the defensive players on Sunday because, “ because the unit was inconsistent and didn’t play up to standards.” (Also per Jenny Vrentas).  Game balls were given to Nick Folk, LaDainian Tomlinson, Plaxico Burress, Isaiah Trufant and Joe McKnight.
  • No major injuries were reported from Sunday Night. Knock on wood.

More news is sure to come throughout the day as the Jets prepare to host the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 2.

Flying Through the Headlines: US Weekly Edition

I decided to have a little fun today and reflect on a few Jets headlines from this week that, when held up next to one another, sort of read like a gossip magazine.  Kind of. Sort of. Whatever. Just enjoy it.

Marc Sanchez on the cover of the September 2011 issue of GQ Magazine

Mark Sanchez in September Issue of GQ:

While it’s kind of old news at this point, quarterback Mark Sanchez’s appearance in the September issue of GQ provided an entire week’s worth of media talking points.

Sanchez’s admission that he wanted to “fight” coach Rex Ryan after he was almost benched for Mark Brunell has been commented on by everyone and their brother.

Oh, and Mark’s tight white jeans did not go over that well with some of his teammates. (Come on, fellas, white jeans and v-necks are in. Open a magazine!)

In addition to talking about his experience as quarterback for the Gang Green, Mark also talks about his life as a New Yorker, where he loves to attend the hottest Broadway shows (he feels that the regimented lives of Broadway performers are strikingly similar to his own) and even confesses that he is a “Gleek” and a “Belieber.”  It is a refreshingly candid interview and the high fashion editorial spread of the star QB show him in another (and very flattering) light.

You can check out a preview of the interview on GQ.com, but you’ll have to purchase the mag for the complete dish and photo spread.  Money well spent in my opinion.

Hayden Panettiere checking out Scotty. (Photo from Jetstwit.)

Scotty McKnight’s Girlfriend, Hayden Panettiere, Attends Training Camp:

Not really sure why this is news but she is cute and she was at practice, supporting her beau, 7th round draft pick Scotty McKnight.  And as far as I can tell, no one was complaining.

You may recall that Hayden was linked to Mark Sanchez over the summer but it turns out the Mark was setting her up with his childhood pal.

She is really cute, Scotty. Don’t screw it up.

In other semi-scandalous Jets news:

  • S James Ihedigbo has signed with the New England Patriots.  The details of the deal are undisclosed.  According to The Star-Ledger, Ihedigbo was raised a Patriots fan and his life long dream has been to wear their uniform.  But Jets fans everywhere cannot help but notice that Ihedigbo is yet another example of a Jets player that Bill Belichick has added to his collection.  What gives?  Bart Scott of the New York Post wrote a very interesting article on the Patriots and their recent acquisitions of Jets players, insinuating that Hoodie might be showing some desperation.
  • Met Life has secured the naming rights for New Meadowlands Stadium.  According to the New York Post, the deal could be as much as $20 million over the next 20 years. So MetLife Stadium it is.  Unfortunately for MetLife, history has shown that slapping your name on a stadium often devalues the stock of your company.  In a recent study from Barron’s, analysts found that naming a stadium was more likely to, “benefit corporate egos more than shareholders.”  Time to sell, kids.

You can check out a preview of tonight’s game vs. the Cincinnati Bengals here.

MetLife Stadium?

Picutre this: The New Meadowlands Stadium could soon be called MetLife Stadium.

According to Sports Business Journal, MetLife, who currently has some sponsorship with the New Meadowland Stadiums, is trying to acquire the naming rights to the Jets and Giants home stadium.  The cost? $17-18 million a YEAR.  If you think that is a lot, listen to this: originally, the Jets/Giants were looking for a deal worth $30 million.

The current “cornerstone sponsorship” MetLife has with the New Meadowlands Stadium is worth an estimated $7 million. If Metlife were to acquire the naming rights the stadium would be able to replace that sponsorship with another company, earning them more sponsorship (sorry–I know that seems obvious but thought it was worth mentioning).

The most recent report from the New Jersey Star-Ledger states that the deal is not finalized but has, “advanced to the point that other suitors inquiring about naming rights have been told they were not available.”

Experts feel that the price tag coming down from $30 to 18 million indicates “new economics” in naming rights.

I’m not a fan of the re-naming, but I get it.  You want more money, more sponsors and more revenue.  What do you think of the re-naming?
