Mike T Does It Again: Jets Sign Bell, Release Maybin

Maybin played his last game in a Jets uniform vs. the Miami Dolphins in week 8.

The Jets have signed running back Kahlil Bell to the active roster and released speciality pass rusher Aaron Mayin.

Bell played for the Chicago Bears from 2009-2011, and was the starting running back for a brief period of time last season (weeks 16-17) after both Matt Forte and Marion Barber were sidelined with injuries. He was on and off the Bears roster for some time early this season before he was waived for the last time on October 15th (after Forte returned in full from his injury).

With injuries to both Joe McKnight and Bilal Powell (Powell suffered a concussion on Sunday), the Jets needed more depth at the position. Greene, Bell and Lex Hilliard will join forces to deliver a fierce Ground and Pound on Sunday in St.Louis (yes, that is sarcasm, guys).

As for poor Aaron Maybin - who apparently heard the news that he was being released while en route to a team charity event – the writing was on the wall when it was announced he was inactive for Sunday’s game. The move also coincided with the promotion of OLB Ricky Sapp from the practice squad.

It’s a bit of a strange personnel decision. Maybin has certainly not been productive this year – he did not record a single sack yet in 2012 – but he did have immense athleticism that was productive last season. Perhaps this means the Jets are done stringing along Rex’s projects? Or maybe Maybin really was a one-year wonder.

Three other interesting notes on Maybin:

  • He only picked up pressure on 9.5% of pass rushes this year. Number was 13% last year, per PFF.
  • The Jets gave Maybin a $325,000 signing bonus this year, per Jets cap. So at least he got paid?
  • Maybin playing in only 119 snaps, 18.8% of teams plays.

Also, CB Isaiah Trufant was placed on season-ending IR today with a knee injury, the team announced. Trufant had played well in the past few games and looked to be coming along nicely. Seems imminent Jets will make a corresponding move considering Rex’s love of DBs.
