Tebow Tidbit Of The Week: Tebow to Be Used on Kickoffs?

Tebow: They’re using me on kickoffs now. You’re totally good, man.

In addition to backing up Mark Sanchez, protecting punts and Red Zone QB/RB/blocker duties, the Jets are toying with the idea of adding additional roles for Tim Tebow.

According to the Daily News’ Manish Mehta, the Jets are considering using Tebow as a situational kick returner. Mehta’s spoke with assistant special teams coach Ben Kotwica, who explained the latest plans for Tebow:

“I think there might be some value there on kickoff returns. It’s something that we’ve talked about. I don’t think there’s any option with Tim that we’ve taken off the table. So, that would be something that would be new to him as well. In what we’ve asked him to do as the personal protector (right now), he’s done an excellent job …..

There’s certain guys that… if you ask them to go be the personal protector, you go ask them to be the fullback, you ask them to be the quarterback, you ask them to be the tight end, they simply get things done.

I think you’d be hard pressed to say that Tim is not one of those guys that gets things done.”

Kotwica also talks about Tebow’s weight (around 250) and speed and how it would translate to special teams coverage.

Few key phrases here to discuss:

  • “It’s something we’ve talked about.” Translation: It’s not a sure thing. We are exploring their options. Let’s wait and see how this turns out. Chill.
  • “I don’t think there’s any option with Tim that we’ve taken off the table.” Translation: Again, exploring options. Trying to find the best way to use him.
  • “They [certain guys, meaning Tebow] simply get things done.” I’m going to leave that one alone; might upset some people.

This could VERY well be a bunch of BS, considering just how many Tebow tidbits have been given away this off-season. The Jets don’t want to reveal to the other teams in the league exactly how they plan to use their shiny new football player, now do they? (Wait — don’t answer that?). Playing Tebow on kickoffs puts him at high risk for injury, and he is, after all, supposed to be the back-up QB.

I guess we will all find out what’s up with this soon enough.
