Marquette Defeats Providence and a Bat?

The Marquette Golden Eagles defeated the Providence Friars on Saturday night 81-71. Everything was pretty normal until the second half when the game was delayed because there was a bat in the arena. The bat dive bombed players, coaches, and fans. At one point, officials ordered the lights turned out to calm the bat down. You can see videos below.

I was not able to actually watch the game tonight but followed closely on ESPN’s ScoreCenter app on my iPad.

The first had of the game, Providence seemed to have a handle on the Golden Eagles’ man to man defense which put them ahead 40-39 at the end of the first half.

Marquette was able to pull away in the second half with Jamil Wilson’s jumper and 3-pointer from the corner. Davante Gardner also came up big when he scored in the lane, hit a free throw and made a outback shot.

The final score was 79-72. This was Marquette’s first Big East road win and Coach Buzz Williams’ 99th win of his career.

Big contributors for Marquette included Jae Crowder with 18 points, Jamil Wilson with a career-best 16 points and Darius Johnson-Odom with 16 points.

Next up for Marquette is USF on January 24 at the Bradley Center in Milwaukee, WI. Tipoff is at 7 pm CST on the Big East Network.

Marquette looks to get their first Big East road win against the Providence Friars on Saturday.

Despite their slow started, the Golden Eagles won their last three home games. In Monday’s game against Louisville, Marquette trailed by 16 points in the first 7 minutes and went on to come back by halftime and go on to win the game.

Providence is 12-7 overall, 1-5 in the Big East. Their only victory can against Louisville on January 10.

The Friars were without their leading scorer Vnce Council against the Orange last Saturday. He was suspended by coach Ed Cooley and is expected to be back for the game against Marquette.

Marquette leads the all-time series with Providence 10-4. The Golden Eagles have won the past seven matchups. Their last meeting was in the first round of the Big East tournament last March.

Tip-off is 6 pm CST in Providence. The game can be seen on the Big East Network.
