Marquette’s Big East Schedule Takes Shape

The Big East schedules are being released. At home, Marquette will play Connecticut, DePaul, Georgetown, Notre Dame, Pittsburgh, Providence, Seton Hall, South Florida, and Syracuse.

The Golden Eagles will face Cincinnati, Georgetown, Louisville, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, St. John’s, Seton Hall, South Florida, and Villanova on the road.

Marquette Loses to Louisville in the Big East Tournament

Turnovers galore for Marquette as they fall to Louisville 84-71. The Golden Eagles had a career high 26 turnovers in this game.

Darius Johnson-Odom had 26 points on the evening.

Kyle Kuric scored 20 points and Peyton Siva added 18 points along with eight rebounds, six assists and four steals for the Cardinals.

Marquette trailed the whole game. The Golden Eagles got within four points in the second half but then lost momentum as Louisville lengthened their lead. Senior Jae Crowder who is a big producer couldn’t find a rhythm during the game. Louisville was also very good on the offensive glass, grabbing rebound after rebound. They had a quick game play and made nice shot selections.

I guess we’ll be looking forward to Selection Sunday to see where our boys end up. I’ll be covering the rest of the Big East Tournament  in the Neutral Zone.

Marquette faces Louisville tonight at Madison Square Garden for the Big East Tournament. The Golden Eagles secured a double bye in the tournament and Louisville had a single bye. We’ll see if that extra day of rest will be beneficial for Marquette.

Earlier this year, Marquette defeated Louisville at the Bradley Center. At one time, they trailed by as many as 16 points but came back to win 74-63.

Louisville defeated Seton Hall yesterday 61-55 in the second round of the Big East tournament. Peyton Siva had 14 points and Kyle Kuric had 13 points for the Cardinals.

Marquette needs to start with strong defense and quick scoring drives. While they have been better as of late, the Golden Eagles need to make sure they don’t fall behind early and have to make a comeback. With two days of rest, I think these guys will be able to take on Louisville with full force tonight.

Tip-off is 6 pm CST at Madison Square Garden. The game can be seen on ESPN.

Marquette trailed Louisville by 16 points 7 minutes into the first half and rallied to beat the Cardinals 74-63.

The Golden Eagles have made a very bad habit of starting slow in many of their games this season. It’s great to see them come back and win but it won’t work every time. They need to figure out how to start strong and stay strong throughout the game.

Davante Gardner had another big game, scoring 17 points and six rebounds. He made a few key point under the basket and got fouled. Gardner was able to make all 7 free throws. He has been starting for center Chris Otule who is out for the season with a left knee injury.

Other big scorers for the Golden Eagles were Darius Johnson-Odom with 18 points and Jae Crowder with 14 points.

Louisville’s big scorers were Russ Smith with 20 points and Chris Smith with 19 points. This was Louisville’s third loss in its last four Big East games.

Marquette goes on the road to play Providence on Saturday, January 21. The game can be seen on the Big East Network at 6 pm CST.

Game Preview: Marquette vs. Louisville

Darius Johnson-OdomFresh off a win over Pittsburgh, Marquette is set to face 14th-ranked Louisville at the Bradley Center this afternoon.

The Louisville Cardinals leading scorer Kyle Kuric has been sidelined due to a high left ankle sprain. Sophomore Russ Smith has been assigned the starting job in his place. Smith averages 12.2 points per game but lacks scoring consistency. He has scored three or fewer points in four games and scored at least 23 points in four other games. Let’s hope the Marquette defense can shut Smith down this afternoon.

The Golden Eagles are coming off of two straight home wins and looking for a third to close out the homestead. They need to start strong if they want to beat Louisville. The last few games Marquette has gone to the locker room at half down and staged comebacks to win. That will not work as they get deeper into Big East play.

Freshman Todd MAyo is coming off of a stellar defensive performance against Pittsburgh. He came off the bench to score nine points and seven rebounds but it was his defensive work in the three-quarter-court press that helped the Golden Eagles go on a 13-0 run in the second half to take the lead.

Seniors Darius Johnson-Odom contributed 18 points and Jae Crowder had 15 points. Together they combined for six of seven three pointers during the game.

Tip-off at the Bradley Center is 2:30 pm CST on ESPN.
