Well, Marquette had another over time thriller against the Pittsburgh Panthers, 74-67. Marquette remains unbeaten in Big East play.
Vander Blue had 22 points in the game while Davante Gardner added 13 points. Jamil Wilson had 11 points and five rebounds and Todd Mayo scored 10 points.
Marquette did not trail in the game’s final 28 minutes. Pitt’s Lamar Patterson hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to tie the game and send it to overtime. The Golden Eagles then took control and pulled ahead of the Panthers to win in the five minute overtime.
Marquette takes on the Seton Hall Pirates on Wednesday.
On Saturday, Marquette along with the six other Big East schools announced they would be leaving the conference to form their own basketball first conference.
The presidents of the seven schools said in a statement:
“Earlier today we voted unanimously to pursue an orderly evolution to a foundation of basketball schools that honors the history and tradition on which the Big East was established. Under the context of conference realignment, we believe pursuing a new basketball framework that builds on this tradition of excellence and competition is the best way forward.”
There has been no time table for the move although the Big East does require conference members to give 27 months notice but if they vote to leave as a group, the Big East will allow them to leave as a group without paying the exit fees.
I’ll keep tabs on this story as we get more details. This is probably the best option for the non-football schools.
The Marquette Golden Eagles fell to the Florida Gators, 82-49.
Vander Blue scored a game high of 20 points but was the only player to score in double digits.
Marquette looked very flat during the game and failed to get shots to drop. In the first half, Marquette went cold at the 6:53 mark and got shut out in the second half at the 4:53 mark to get blown out.
Florida had six players scoring in double figures and dominated the floor.
Hopefully Marquette can bounce back from this loss in the next game.
After waiting for what seems like forever, Marquette’s Big East schedule was announced. It features five home Saturday games at the BMO Harris Bradley Center (I’m still not used to calling it that.) as well as a Big Monday matchups. You can see the full schedule below. I can’t wait for the return of basketball season!
Marquette head coach Buzz Williams announced that assistant coach Scott Monarch was dismissed on Friday and that he will seve a one game suspension as part of self imposed sanctions for NCAA rules violations.
It was reported that Monarch gave team issued apparel and gave unauthorized transportation to a recruit. He then was untruthful about these events with the administration when the violations were discovered.
Here is what coach Williams said on the matter: “When I was allowed to review the report earlier this week, I was deeply saddened to learn of an error in judgment of one of my assistants and closest friends. I take personal responsibility for what happens in this program and realize we must be role models to both our team and the entire university. Our commitment has always been and will always be to operate this program at the highest level of integrity in the Marquette and Jesuit tradition.” » Continue reading “Marquette Assistant Coach Dismissed”

Darius Johnson-Odom was drafted 55th by the Dallas Mavericks. Johnson- Odom scored a team-high 18.3 points and 2.7 assists for the Marquette last season.
Congratulations Darius!
Looks like Jae Crowder will be joining his teammate in Dallas as he was traded to them by the Mavericks. It will be great to see those two together again.
