Chandler Jones is a New England Patriot. And getting paid for it too.
The team announced on Wednesday that they have locked up their first round draft choice, selected 21st overall in last month’s draft. Details were not immediately available, but this is the fifth of last month’s pick the Pats have hashed out a contract with. Only first rounder Dont’a Hightower and third round choice Jake Bequette remain unsigned.
This year’s rookies can thank their speedy contract negotiations on the new rookie wage scale established by last year’s CBA negotiations. In general, players wouldn’t reach contract agreements until just before training camp or later, but the ease at which the contracts can be made now is good for both team and player. Even without a contract, a rookie counts towards a team’s 90-man limit and there isn’t a ton of leverage for athletes based on the scale that’s been decided upon so there’s incentive on both sides to just get it done and move on.
That’s what the Patriots have done so far. And it’s only May. Chalk one up to the new CBA.
