Sunday Morning Blitz: Conference Championship Sunday has arrived

It’s finally here. The NFC and AFC title games will be taking place today. This is the first of three more Sundays we have left in this NFL season. Yes that is right! We have this week, the Pro Bowl next week and the Super Bowl two weeks from now. I’m sure you’re all just thrilled.

The AFC championship game will be played first at 3 p.m. ET on CBS. The game will feature the two top teams in the AFC, the Denver Broncos will host the New England Patriots. Of course, the big headline, or at least the one every living, breathing member of the media will focus on today, is the Peyton Manning-Tom Brady showdown.

Don’t let the talk about two quarterbacks stop you from searching for great storylines for the game. For example, there’s a great feature on Broncos offensive lineman Orlando Franklin. There’s also the Champ Bailey storyline.

The NFC championship game takes place at 6:30 p.m. ET in Seattle as the Seahawks host the 49ers on FOX. If we could, let’s try to get away from all this Jim Harbaugh khaki pants storyline. Better yet, we could talk about a racing horse named after Jim Harbaugh. We can also talk about the fact that this is a rivalry that has lasted for nearly 30 years.

We do have a couple of NFL stories that have gone on this weekend.

The big story in Los Angeles had to do with the arrest of former Saints safety Darren Sharper. TMZ, the first site to report the story, relayed a report from law enforcement that Sharper is being investigated for two separate sexual assault cases.

Additionally, WDSU reported Sharper is facing a similar investigation for an additional complaint in New Orleans. Sharper was working as an analyst for the NFL Network and has been suspended indefinitely, according to various media reports.

In Minnesota, it was the end of the era for the Metrodome as it was deflated on Saturday. You can see video, as well as a photo gallery on the Star Tribune website.

While the Vikings will be losing the dome, it will likely be gaining a Norv Turner…I MEAN…an offensive coordinator NAMED Norv Turner.

Enjoy this Sunday of football.
