The Making of a Bat

Louisville Slugger was at the Cell this past weekend. Just like last season, they had on display bats used by some major leaguers, both current and former players.

In addition to showing bats used by Shoeless Joe Jackson, Paul Konerko, AJ Pierzynski and Hank Aaron, they were also showing how bats were made back in the day. For years, it was done by hand and now it is done all by computers / machines. It takes about 30 minutes for a bat to be made for a player by hand and seeing how it is done is quite fascinating.

If you were able to get out to the ballpark to see it first hand, that is fantastic. If not, I have a few videos showing the making of Shoeless Joe’s bat as well as pictures of the process and the bats on display.

Enjoy!

The bat being made is Shoeless Joe Jackson’s bat.

Embarrassed to say that I went to the bat factory in Indiana that made Sammy Sosa’s bats. It was a pretty neat experience and I even got my own little custom bat! :)

no need to be embarrassed! it is so cool to watch the bats being made. the guy who was making shoeless joe’s bat, also is pretty good at making honus wagner’s bat as well, though he wasn’t making that one this past weekend.
