Chatting with Brooks Boyer

This afternoon, some White Sox bloggers got to speak with Brooks Boyer. As we’ve all become aware, the White Sox are honoring the 1983 “Winning Ugly” team this season by wearing the 1983 uniforms on Sundays like they did last year for the 1972 team. Like last year, there will be Retro Racers on Sundays. This year’s 1983 racers will be Harold Baines, Ron Kittle and Carlton Fisk. Many of this year’s giveaways will be centered around the 1983 team, including the Harold Baines and Ron Kittle bobbleheads.

Boyer said that with the vast history of the White Sox and the use of some cool and some not-so-cool uniforms of the paste, the Sox are using the throwback jerseys as a way to not only honor great teams of the past but also to teach younger generations about the history of the team. The Sox would like to continue wearing throwback jerseys, and Boyer said they don’t need a milestone to celebrate to wear a jersey

Boyer was asked some specifics about the uniforms the players will be wearing on Sundays. They will be wearing the 1983 caps and helmets, and the uniforms will feature the All-Star Game patch. The players won’t be required to wear red shoes to go along with the 1983 uniforms. Most players wore red shoes with the pinstripes last season, so it’s possible that many players will wear red shoes this season. Boyer said they could wear ballet shoes for all he cares, as long as they go out and play well.

Adventures In Baseball

Texting and driving and texting and batting practice do not mix. ~Will Ohman.

The White Sox had another social media night event at the ballpark last night. In addition to getting to see the Sox take batting practice, there was a pre-game parade around the warning track for the fans who participated as well as may giveaways throughout the night. It was Ladies’ Night at the park where women could get manicures and massages around.

Joe Crede was on hand and it was also Roger “The SodFather” Bossard bobblehead night. In addition to signed items from players for social media night, there were two special prizes: a chance to sit in the Gold Coast Ticket club for an inning with Joe Crede and a chance to change a base during the game. » Continue reading “Adventures In Baseball”

Blog Night At The Cell

Buddy answering questions at Blog Night

Tuesday night, the Chicago White Sox hosted their sixth annual Blog Night. It is a chance for fans to chat with some key people in the Sox organization as well as interact with each other. Somehow, I have missed hearing about the previous Blog Nights, but I made sure to go this year. Guest speakers were Buddy Bell, Brooks Boyer and Ron Kittle. Below is a summary of what was talked about. Scott Reifert acted as emcee for the event and it was a lot of fun to participate in.

Most of the discussions were answering questions from us fans rather than any prepared speeches about things and then answer questions. Scott Reifert got thing going by filling us in on some upcoming things at the park. There will be another social media night, like the tweet up earlier in the season. This one will have some giveaways involved before the event for things that wil happen at the event.

As for other events, Mayor Daley will be honored on August 3rd. Aside from the President, he is probably the most famous White Sox fan. Moose Skowran was supposed to attend the night, but he wasn’t feeling well. He is toward the end of his treatment, but overall is doing very well.

Roland Hemond, who was recently awarded the Buck O’Neil award will be able to receive congratulatory messages from fans. There will be a table set up soon (if not already) at the park near the White Sox Charities that you can write messages to him. They are looking into doing something similar for fans who’d like to send well wishes to Moose as well.

South Side Hits

Yes! It is Friday, the White Sox are back home. They need support, so hopefully they get it from us fans. Not to mention, the all-star ballot box needs to be stuffed. The King and Alexei need your votes. Of course, you can do it online as well, but since the weather looks to be lovely this weekend, you should ballot stuff at the park. Not to mention, if you bring 40 filled out ballots to Bacardi at the Park on Sunday, you can get $5 off your bill.

South Side Hits

Well, so far so good in Toronto. Got a win last night which is a serious feat considering how the Sox generally play on the artificial surface and against the Jays. Back at it tonight, but in the meantime, here is your morning reading.

Marketing the White Sox

Just when I thought there wouldn’t be much to mull over before things actually get under way on Friday, yesterday turned into quite the eventful day. The afternoon featured a conference call with The White Sox VP of Marketing, Brooks Boyer and the evening featured an event with Blogs with Balls and Bloomberg Sports discussing products useful for playing fantasy baseball and what major league teams can use.

The Blogs with Balls event was fun. If you happen to be a stat person, these products would probably give you a ridiculous amount of pleasure (read sensory overload and have you drooling). Bloomberg Sports gave a brief demonstration of its Front Office 2011 to use for fantasy baseball. While the product has features to help you prepare for the draft, they realized that most people who attended the event had probably already done their draft. What is really cool about this is the information you can use during the season to help you win your league. One feature that I was intrigued by was the ability to link your fantasy league (if you play using CBS, ESPN or Yahoo) to their tool. When you link your league, the Bloomberg tools will sync with your league’s settings and rules and help you scout, evaluate trades, suggest trades and all the other things you would do as an owner taking into account what you are scoring on. In other words, all the information you are getting is taking into account how your league is set up and scores points.

Attendees at the event also got to see a brief taste of what the Bloomberg product can do for Major League teams. They have data dating all the way back to before 1901. It has every kind of information imaginable on a pitcher, such as what pitches are thrown, by inning, by batter, count, ballpark, etc. There is also the same type of information available for hitters as well. » Continue reading “Marketing the White Sox”
