Humber and Homer Happy Sox Stop Seattle

Phil Humber.

Phil freakin’ Humber.

Who knew that Jake Peavy’s “replacement” would turn out to be so incredibly good? Humber took to the mound to face the Seattle Mariners and King Felix.

Humber went 7.2 innings, giving up one earned run on five hits and three walks, before Chris Sale came on in relief, giving up only one hit in 1.1 innings. The Sox beat the Mariners 5-1.

Humber now has a 5-3 record and the White Sox are now just three games under .500 and six games behind of the recently slumping Cleveland Indians.

A Series Win!

Decked out in pink for Mother’s Day, the White Sox finished their three-game set in Seattle with a series win, beating the Mariners 5-2 in ten innings.

The Sox scored their first two runs in the fourth inning. Paul Konerko, who went 5-for-5, doubled to center with one out, and Alex Rios followed with a single. After Brent Lillibridge struck out, Ramon Castro singled to left, scoring Konerko and Rios on a missed catch error by Mariners catcher Miguel Olivo.

The Sox scored three runs off Seattle’s closer, Brandon League, in the top of the tenth. Brent Morel led off the inning with a single and moved to second on Juan Pierre’s sac bunt. Alexei Ramirez doubled to left, scoring Morel and then scored on Adam Dunn’s double to right. Konerko singled to center, moving Dunn to third, and he scored on Rios’s single to center, giving the Sox a 5-2 lead.

The Mariners scored both of their runs in the fifth. Jack Cust led off the inning with a double to center, and Jack Wilson singled on a pop bunt to Sox starter Mark Buehrle, moving Cust to third. After Michael Saunders struck out swinging, Brendan Ryan singled to right, scoring Cust and moving Wilson to third. Ichiro hit a sac fly to center, scoring Wilson and ending the Mariners’ scoring for the day.

The Sox continue their West Coast road trip in Los Angeles tomorrow night as they face the Angels who took their series against the red-hot Cleveland Indians (thank you!). Edwin Jackson (2-4, 4.98) faces Ervin Santana (1-3, 4.43), and the Sox hope to keep this short win streak alive!

Offensive Eruption? What Is This?

A night of semi-snarky tweets about the Sox and they decide to win. I thank them for this because if they’d have lost, it would have topped off an otherwise great day for me in a rather crappy way. The Sox got the scoring going early in the first inning with — TWO OUT SCORING! Adam Dunn got a double, his third of the season and The King drove him in on a single. Paul Konerko did end up with the final out of the inning due to getting involved in a rundown. Debatable whether he needed to do this to ensure Donkey scored, but a run is a run at this point.

Gavin Floyd had his pitches working in this game. He kept the Mariners off the board the entire night, limiting them to three hits the entire night. Tony Peña also looked good in his inning of relief only walking one batter and striking out Jack Cust to end the game. » Continue reading “Offensive Eruption? What Is This?”

How Low Can They Go?

The White Sox seem to enjoy last place in all of baseball, as they lost another game, this time to the Mariners. Something is wrong with this team, and they need to try and fix it quickly. How much farther down in the standings can this team go?

Phil Humber faced Felix Hernandez tonight and pitched well again. He lasted seven innings, giving up two runs on three hits and three walks. This brings his ERA to 2.97 on the season. For a Jake Peavy replacement, he is pitching incredibly well.

Matt Thornton came on in the eighth in relief. In 1.2 innings, he gave up a run on four hits. Thornton pitched decently, and he is gradually getting back to the Matt Thornton we have come to know and love.

The offense is still lackluster. A run scored in the fourth and in the seventh. The Sox had only five hits. Juan Pierre was batted in during the fourth on a Paul Konerko sac fly. The run in the seventh was Carlos Quentin’s seventh home run of the season.

The Mariners scored two of their three runs in the sixth. Humber walked Ichiro to lead off the inning. Ichiro advanced to second on a sac bunt from Chone Figgins and scored on a double from Milton Bradley. Bradley scored on a ground-rule double from Justin Smoak.

Bradley was ejected in the eighth inning. With one out, Figgins doubled to right. Bradley was called out on strikes and Figgins stole third on an attempted “strike him out, throw him out” play. Bradley argued with home plate umpire Mike Muchlinski and was ejected.

The last run for the Mariners was scored on a walk-off. With one out, Thornton gave up back-to-back singles to Jack Cust and Jack Wilson. Michael Saunders flied out for the second out, but Brendan Ryan singled to center, scoring pinch runner Adam Kennedy.

Hopefully the Sox can get back on track tomorrow as Gavin Floyd faces Doug Fister.
