South Side Hits: February 18, 2012 White Sox Reads

Happy weekend! The week did provide some actual White Sox news (see the Fukudome signing) as well as pitchers and catchers for other teams starting to report. The Sox are still a few days away, but in the meantime while we wait, here are some stories from the past few days that you might have missed reading. Next week, we can FINALLY get to talking about baseball on a daily basis. Hopefully it won’t bore us to tears. Meanwhile, here is some reading to start your weekend off properly.

Remember Brian Anderson? Well, the former outfielder is now ready to continue embarking on a career as a pitcher.

In the continuing “stir the pot” controversy, Rob Neyer at SB Nation examines the comments that Greg Walker made to resident pot stirrer Joe Cowley about the under performing 2011 team.

SB Nation has a look at the projected lineup for the Sox this season. This obviously can easily change, but this is who they think will be on the team come Opening Day at this point in time.

Will the 2012 season be a race to the basement for the Twins and Sox? The StarTribune says these two teams will be competing for the basement. FRT, I think the Sox will finish 4th and the Twins 5th at this point in time.  » Continue reading “South Side Hits: February 18, 2012 White Sox Reads”

Sell Me on Those Sox

“Hello! Welcome to [name of big warehouse store]! Would you like to try our [name of product]?”

I work weekends as Free Sample Girl at one of the big warehouse stores, so you can imagine how many times I say that a day. My job is to sell you whatever product is on my cart, and more often than not, I’m pretty good at it. If you have things in your shopping cart already, I can take a quick glance in and see if I can relate the product I’m sampling to what’s in your cart.

The point is, I can sell food products REALLY well. So why am I telling you this?

The AFC and NFC Championship games were on Sunday. So the store was really slow. Not many people wanted to try my red grapefruit.

It gave me time to think, and I thought to myself, “If the White Sox were a product in this store, how would I sell them? Especially this year.”

South Side Hits: October 22, 2011 White Sox News

And the Series gets back under way tonight. Each team has won a game and apparently Thursday night, the Cardinals caused some controversy by not talking to the media post-game. Wonder where that came from? My guess would be the ever “awesome” Mr. LaRussa. Seems like something he would do. No matter, we can still dream about the White Sox making a run and being in the World Series this time next year.

Still, not much happening in the world of White Sox baseball. But there is a tiny bit of news, so here ya go:

Greg Walker has surprised and is employed as a hitting coach for the 2012 season. Guess where he’ll be.

South Side Sox looks at the role of conflict and its usefulness for the White Sox.

Doug Padilla says it may be time for the White Sox to make changes at the top of the organization.

That is it for now. Maybe something big will happen in the next few days. Probably not, but what I’m really hoping is that the hot stove, when it finally begins, will be hot at 35th & Shields.

South Side Hits: October 11, 2011

Today is a big day in White Sox land. Robin Ventura will be introduced as the manager today and there is also a possibility of more coaches being added to the staff. I will be sure to tune in or at least catch a recap of what happened. In the meantime, here is some news you might have missed.

Mark Buehrle is projecting to be a Type B free agent.

Former White Sox hitting coach Greg Walker may be a hitting coach again?

A review of AJ Pierzynski, the analyst.

A look at the new coaches on the White Sox staff.

Tony LaRussa provides an endorsement of Robin as manager.  » Continue reading “South Side Hits: October 11, 2011″

Well . . .

Ozzie is gone. He posted on his blog last night that he was going to Florida, but it was taken down. Of course, there are many things to think about with his departure.

First, we know that Joey Cora will be managing the final two games of the season. I like Joey and given that it is the last couple of games, it almost seems a moot point. I feel certain that Joey is not on the short list of candidates that Ken Williams had mentioned last night in the post-game press conference. So the question is who will be the manager? » Continue reading “Well . . .”

Happenings At 35th & Shields

Hope you are all doing well. The tragic number is at nine games right now. It could be worse, but the Sox did win yesterday’s game in the most amazing fashion. This of course, after numerous bases-loaded situations. In any event, later today, the Sox can try to make sure their tragic number doesn’t shrink to nothing.

As the season draws to a close, there are plenty of ridiculous things that are going on with the Sox. Here are the highlights of recent stuff.

So long, farewell, auf wiedersehen goodbye. Jake “Dirt Bag” Peavy is done for the season. Does this really matter at this point? » Continue reading “Happenings At 35th & Shields”

South Side Hits

Jake just might be back folks. I still want to see how he bounces back after a few more starts as well as see how he feels the day after. Last night was spectacular to see. Complete games pitched by both sides. The Sox were just a little bit better. Tonight, I’m hoping for more, but a slug fest that goes the White Sox way would be good too. Until then, here are some stories you might have missed and should read.

In odd news, brothers are fighting over autographed White Sox baseballs.

The latest mailbag to Mark Gonzales. Interesting to read just for the comedy of some of the questions asked. Some are good and others, well . . .

A look at Harmon Killebrew’s statistical achievements.

Quick update on guys in the minors, including Dayan Viciedo and Tyler Flowers.

Walk on the offensive woes of late. Be sure to read down to see what Ken Williams has to say about potential moves in the near future.

Melissa explains how the White Sox got her through college.

Hopefully this evening it’s a bit warmer at the ball park than it has been the last couple of days. And the Sox continue the march toward .500. (Sad we are even thinking that sort of thing)

South Side Hits

MLB Teams: If you are in a slump and just can’t figure things out, might I suggest you play the White Sox? It seems that their play of late is so bad, that it leads to other teams getting decent. For examples, see the Tampa Bay Rays who went on a roll after being in Chicago or the Twins who just swept the Sox and probably will now get their ship righted. Or even the Cleveland Indians who have the best record in baseball and started the season playing the White Sox. KIDDING! (Or maybe I’m not since the Sox are playing SO WELL lately.)

Fortunately today is an off day before the team takes on the Seattle Mariners for three games. In the meantime, use today to get caught up in other happenings around baseball with a few headlines.

Yeah, John Danks really  wears it when it comes to getting offensive support.

Think you’re puzzled by the woeful White Sox? So is Ozzie. And he makes no excuses either.

While Francisco Liriano had the first no-hitter of 2011, it doesn’t mean he is on track to have a great year.

More tidbits on Liriano’s no-hitter Tuesday night.

Jim takes a look at one of the fan-favorite candidates to blame for the White Sox pathetic offense.

Will McDonald has the scoop on the fans who thought the Royals would be as good as they are so early.

J.J. discusses AJ Pierzynski’s slump.

Future Sox discusses April’s top prospects.

Brett has some ideas for fixing the woes on the south side.

This should tide you over. Enjoy this slop fest free day and hopefully things will be better tomorrow and over the weekend.

South Side Hits

The past week, I’ve been listening to a song that I sometimes hear at the end of my yoga classes (when I make it to them) when we are in final resting pose, savasana (corpse pose). The song is called Om Namah Shivaya and it is a really relaxing song, even though it has a feel that makes you want to move. In any event, apparently my pleas to the Baseball gods have gone unheard since while the offense is making solid contact on the ball, the balls have been finding Rays players’ gloves. I can’t even discuss last nithg’s game because everyone saw what did and didn’t happen. However, it’s a new day and to start it off right, here is some morning reading to enjoy.

By many people’s standards and expectations, things just ain’t right in the AL Central.

South Side Hits – Monday Edition

The White Sox seem to be on a roll. Gavin had a good outing yesterday. Phil Humber had a good one on Saturday. Some guys in the bullpen have started to figure things out, such as Will Ohman and Chris Sale looked pretty good in his first save opportunity this season. Hopefully the trend continues with the pitching and the hitting continues what it has been doing.

To start your day, here are some things to read. No Monday Funday today since there is a game, but it will be back for a special Thursday edition since the White Sox have the day off before hosting the Angels this weekend.

This time last season the mantra was “Fire Greg Walker!” but not this season. See what he thinks about the hitting thus far this season.

Given that the biggest rival to the White Sox has gotten off to a slow start, see what Beearleaguer White Sox says about this slow start.

Six-man rotation? Maybe it could happen.

Up next for the White Sox are the Oakland Athletics. Look for lineups to be posted here later today. Go White Sox!
