White Sox Get Stung, Lose to Rays

Gavin FloydThe White Sox did not have their good stuff tonight. In the third game of the series against the Rays, the Sox couldn’t do much, as they fell 10-4.

Pitching was all sorts of bad tonight. Gavin Floyd started the game, and he didn’t last very long. In 2.2 innings pitched, he gave up two runs on two hits and two walks. He left in the third inning with a flexor muscle strain in his right elbow. Hector Santiago came on in relief, and he didn’t have a much better night. He pitched 3.2 innings, giving up four runs on ten hits. » Continue reading “White Sox Get Stung, Lose to Rays”

And Then There Was One

yeah, he was bad today!

The Sox lost today. But you probably already knew that. The Tigers won. Again, you probably already knew that. The Tragic number at the start of the day was at three. Now it is at one. It wasn’t a pretty start for Jose Quintana who was throwing a bajillion pitches in just the first inning. So many in fact, that Philip Humber was up and warming in the bullpen.

Sure, he settled down but as usual, the offense was just not around today. Yeah, they put up a couple of runs. And yeah, they managed to string together some hits ( a whopping FIVE in total) but it was just too little too late. David Price is a 20-game winner  now. There was a brief moment when the Sox looked like they would get to him, but alas, it didn’t happen. Remember when this team was AMAZABALLS with RISP? If you don’t, it’s ok as it was such a long time ago. Now, this team is just looking lifeless. » Continue reading “And Then There Was One”

Sale Shines as Sox Score a Dozen

As you’re probably aware by now, the White Sox beat the Twins in the series finale today, 12-5. It was kind of fantastic, if I do say so myself. For all the struggles the Sox had in the Metrodome, they’re having some better luck now that the Twins play in Target Field. Since Target Field opened in 2010, the Sox are 11-10 there.

Chris Sale continued on with his amazing start to the season, picking up his ninth win and dropping his ERA to 2.27. Of his 93 pitches, 64 were for strikes, and Sale only walked one batter. He did give up two runs, one being a homer in the fifth, but he only allowed six hits over seven innings.

South Side Hits

Ok, fine. David Price now has a win against the Sox. And Edwin Jackson was off last night to say the least. And the offense is sputtering. So what? It’s early, things will get going today. At least that is what I’m going to keep telling myself because it *is* a long season and if I get worked up over things now, I will never make it until late October. So, to keep perspective, here is some light morning reading for you.

Chris Sale recalls his first game at the Trop.

Ozzie gives his thoughts on the current road trip and the upcoming schedule the White Sox have.

Ozzie discusses his use of social media and gives reason for his lack of following anyone on Twitter.

Ken Rosenthal gives his assessment on the use of Matt Thornton.

Chuck Garfien explains why the annoying Cleveland Indians are the real deal.

This is a little bit old, but check out this player profile on The King.

Bryan Stow, the San Francisco Giants fan who was beaten after a game at Dodger stadium has recently had a setback in his recovery and Sox Pitcher Sergio Santos discusses how that is making him feel, including how fans take rivalries with their favorite teams.

In Peavy Watch, Jake left his rehab start early yesterday. Whether his pitching only .2 innings yesterday has an effect on his return to Chicago won’t be known until possibly later today.

Series Preview: White Sox v Rays

The White Sox and Rays will do a rematch of their series this season. This time, the White Sox will be visiting the Trop, where presumably the Rays will have a decided advantage since they play in a dome and the White Sox don’t do so well in domes.

2011 Records: White Sox: (7-8) Rays: (6-9) Season series 3-1

2010 Season Series record: 3-4

All-time White Sox record against the Rays: 62 – 43 (The White Sox are 30-24 at the Trop against the Rays)

In the four games, the following pitchers are expected to start for each team:

Jackson Helps Lead Sox to Home Opener Winner

The White Sox played their first home game of the 2011 season today, welcoming the winless Tampa Bay Rays to the South Side. The Sox sent Edwin Jackson to the mound, whose impressive performance helped the Sox to a 5-1 victory.

Jackson dominated the Rays for eight innings. On a cold April day, Jackson allowed only four hits and one earned run. He also struck out a career-high 13 batters. That total also set a franchise record for a home opener.

The Rays never really threatened until the eighth inning, as Jackson pitched a two-hitter through seven with the only hits coming from Sam Fuld’s leadoff single in the first and BJ Upton’s two-out single in the seventh.

Jackson allowed one earned run which came in the eighth before Sergio Santos finished the game in the ninth.

The Sox scored early with two runs off Rays’ starter David Price in the first. Juan Pierre singled to left to lead off the inning before Price hit Gordon Beckham.

(Beckham is using “Your Love” as one of his at-bat songs again. This particular Sox fan is quite pleased with this development.)

With Pierre on second and Beckham on first, Price gave up a double to Alex Rios, allowing two runs to score. The Sox scored again in the third. Rios doubled to left, and Paul Konerko singled to left to drive Rios home. Konerko has an RBI in each of the first six games, which sets a new franchise record to open the season.

The last two Sox runs came in the eighth. Alexei Ramirez led off the inning with a single to left before AJ Pierzynski bunt popped out to third. Brent Morel flied out to right. During Brent Lillibridge’s at-bat, Ramirez stole second. He came around to score after Lillibridge singled to left. Lillibridge then stole second during Pierre’s at-bat and came around to score on a single to right.

The Sox hope to keep Tampa winless as left-hander John Danks faces James Shields in tomorrow’s first home night game of the season.
