South Side Hits: October 13, 2011

Since the White Sox season ended a few weeks ago, one thing is now clear to me. The off season will not be dull. It all began before the season with the end of Ozzie Guillen on the south side. Then there was Don Cooper managing. Mark Buehrle possibly pitching his last game. Then of course, there is the most recent news with Robin Ventura being named as manager of the team. If somehow the off season manages to be boring, I will be beyond surprised.

Here is the news you might have missed.

Project Bacon appears to be tops for the new coaching staff.

Yesterday a report came out about some of the mess that went on with the Boston Red Sox including clubhouse drinking. Well, our very AJ Pierzynski has owned up to doing just that.

If you think that Paul Konerko as a player manager was a wacky idea, imagine what AJ Pierzynski thought.  » Continue reading “South Side Hits: October 13, 2011″

Red Sox Slip Past White Sox

The White Sox finished off their series against the Boston Red Sox, hoping for a series win. Despite their best efforts, the White Sox fell to the Red Sox with a final score of 5-3.

Mark Buehrle pitched six solid innings and left with a lead. He gave up two runs, both earned, on five hits and three walks. Trouble came in the seventh with Jesse Crain. He lasted 0.1 innings, giving up two runs on three hits. Only one of those runs was earned. Chris Sale came on in relief for an inning. He walked one and struck out two. Jason Frasor pitched for 1.0 innings. He gave up an earned run on one hit and one walk. Will Ohman finished off the ninth, pitching 0.2 innings, intentionally walking Kevin Youkilis and giving up one hit.

Despite racking up 11 hits, the White Sox only scored three runs. Brent Lillibridge, Paul Konerko, and Gordon Beckham were the only starters that did not pick up a hit. Konerko went 0-for-1 with a walk and was hit by a pitch in the fourth inning and left the game. Alexei Ramirez went 2-for-5 with an RBI, and Brent Morel went 2-for-3 with an RBI before Omar Vizquel replaced him as a pinch hitter. Adam Dunn went 1-for-5, but three of those outs were strikeouts. Again. » Continue reading “Red Sox Slip Past White Sox”

Danks Doesn’t Dazzle

John Danks is still winless.

The White Sox sent the lefty up to face the Blue Jays Ricky Romero, but Danks barely lasted four innings and now has an 0-8 record. Danks gave up nine runs in those four innings, as the Sox lost 13-4.

Danks looked terrible in those four innings. He gave up back-to-back-to-back singles, which scored a run. With one out, Danks walked the bases loaded, and the next batter, Aaron Hill, hit a grand slam to put the Blue Jays up 5-1. Immediately following, Danks gave up a homer to Edwin Encarnacion, his first home run of the season. In the fourth, Danks gave up a single to Yunel Escobar which scored Rajai Davis. The next batter, Corey Patterson, hit a two-run homer to right.

African Americans in MLB: Where Are They?

April 15th, the day Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in baseball’s Major League,  is a historic day.  It’s also usually the day “diversity” numbers are released, including the number of African American baseball players in the game.

All I can say is, Jackie Robinson would not be happy.

According to the most recent survey conducted by Richard Lapchick’s Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sports at the University of Central Florida:

The percentage of black players dropped to 8.5 percent on opening day this year, down from 10 percent at the start of last season and its lowest level since 2007. It was 17 percent when Lapchick the began tracking the figure in 1990.

There were also drops in the representation by team coaches and managers. » Continue reading “African Americans in MLB: Where Are They?”
