Blog Night At The Cell

Buddy answering questions at Blog Night

Tuesday night, the Chicago White Sox hosted their sixth annual Blog Night. It is a chance for fans to chat with some key people in the Sox organization as well as interact with each other. Somehow, I have missed hearing about the previous Blog Nights, but I made sure to go this year. Guest speakers were Buddy Bell, Brooks Boyer and Ron Kittle. Below is a summary of what was talked about. Scott Reifert acted as emcee for the event and it was a lot of fun to participate in.

Most of the discussions were answering questions from us fans rather than any prepared speeches about things and then answer questions. Scott Reifert got thing going by filling us in on some upcoming things at the park. There will be another social media night, like the tweet up earlier in the season. This one will have some giveaways involved before the event for things that wil happen at the event.

As for other events, Mayor Daley will be honored on August 3rd. Aside from the President, he is probably the most famous White Sox fan. Moose Skowran was supposed to attend the night, but he wasn’t feeling well. He is toward the end of his treatment, but overall is doing very well.

Roland Hemond, who was recently awarded the Buck O’Neil award will be able to receive congratulatory messages from fans. There will be a table set up soon (if not already) at the park near the White Sox Charities that you can write messages to him. They are looking into doing something similar for fans who’d like to send well wishes to Moose as well.

South Side Hits

So, the weekend was not so good. The weather was bad, although Sunday did have that big orangy-yellow globe in the sky. And the White Sox continued to stink things up on the field getting swept by the Angels. No fun. No fun at all. But, it is a new week, so before you get started, here are some stories you may have missed reading.

AJ Pierzynski has quite the streak of catching going. With Dandruff Boy on the disabled list, makes you appreciate what he does (even if he isn’t swinging the hottest of bats).

Mike discusses Adam Dunn’s likelihood of hitting a single when he is at bat. And in his own words, Adam tells you he stinks right now. Gotta love a guy who says he stinks at the plate :-)

Curious why Omar Vizquel started Sunday’s finale against the Angels over Mark Teahen? Doug Padilla has the answer.

That whole attendance thing? Turns out it’s not just an issue on the South Side as other ballparks are having problems with attendance this season.

With the imminent return of Jake Peavy, don’t expect to see a 6-man rotation any time soon.

Melissa tells you why she’s happy the White Sox are leaving town and a positive in this past weekend’s sweep at the hands of the Angels.

In the final installment of a 3-part series discussing the 20th anniversary of the Cell (which is today), George Castle discusses the renovations made since New Comiskey / US Cellular Field opened.

Think the White Sox are the only team with bullpen issues? Think again.

And finally to perhaps warm the cockles of your soul (because you should really dislike the Twins above any other team the White Sox face on a regular basis), Dan Wade writing for Beer Leaguer explains how the Twins may have had a worse week than your beloved White Sox.

It’s a new day. Unfortunately, the White Sox allowed the Rays to get their first win last night. Coincidence that the Rays’ first win comes on the day that Manny Ramirez decided to call it a career rather than deal with the potential of a 100-game suspension for a positive PED test? Who knows. In any event, for today’s morning reads, there are an array of things to look at.

In Peavy Watch, Jake pitched in a game yesterday. He threw for 3.2 innings with a total of 71 pitches.

After only two games, attendance is already an issue at the Cell. Granted, it’s seems a problem all over MLB, but over the winter, there had already been discussion about the importance of fans showing up for White Sox games.

Even though the White Sox are without Jake Peavy at the moment, now is the time for the team to capitalize due to issues that the Tigers and Twins have. Read why here.

Chuck Garfien got the scoop on Big Donkey diagnosing himself with appendicitis after reading about Matt Holliday’s symptoms

Ozzie and Omar are disappointed in Manny. Really can’t blame either of them given what I saw Manny do when he was with the Cleveland Indians.

Of course, there are many other things happening, but these are the fun things you should know about. Be sure to check back later for the day’s lineups. Hopefully this time the Rays go down and the White Sox don’t have a late inning collapse.
