The Sox headed to New York to face the Yankees for the first time this season. It may be an opportune time to face them, as they lost both CC Sabathia and Andy Pettitte to injuries yesterday.

The Sox sent rookie Dylan Axelrod to the mound to face Ivan Nova. Nova already has nine wins on the season, and Axelrod was looking for his first in a game the Sox won 4-3.

Axelrod pitched pretty well tonight. He went seven innings, allowing two runs on six hits and three walks. Unfortunately he got a no decision tonight, as the Sox were down 2-1 when Hector Santiago came on to pitch the eighth. Santiago had an iffy performance. He allowed one hit, but it was a solo shot to Mark Teixeira.

Axelrod and Santiago were saved in the top of the ninth, however. The Sox were down 3-1. Cody Eppley gave up a single to Alex Rios and was promptly replaced by Clay Rapada. AJ Pierzynski reached on what would have probably been a double play, but Rapada threw the ball into center, allowing AJ to reach first and Rios to cruise into third. David Robertson replaced Rapada, and Eduardo Escobar came on to pinch run for AJ. Dayan Viciedo then blasted his 14th home run of the season to left field, giving the Sox a 4-3 lead.

Viciedo only had that one hit tonight, but it was well timed. Alejandro De Aza had a great night, going 4-for-5 at the plate, including a solo home run off Nova. Rios also had a good night at the plate and in the field. He went 2-for-4 at the plate, and he robbed Derek Jeter of a walk-off two-run homer to end the game.

Jose Quintana faces Adam Warren tomorrow night. Warren is making his Major League debut, as Sabathia and Pettitte are now on the DL.
