With the 7-3 win tonight, the White Sox have done something they haven’t done since 2003: they won a season series against the Yankees. This season, the two played each other seven times. When the series began, it was tied two wins for each team. Tonight, the Sox won their second game in a row meaning they have four wins in the season series. In other words:  SERIES WIN!

This is big news folks. Even in looking at the all-time series record, the Yankees have walloped the Sox. Tonight, the tables were turned and the Sox did a little beating of their own. 

Things didn’t start out very promising with Derek Jeter hitting the first pitch of the game to left field for a home run. After that, the bases ended up loaded. It looked like this was going to be a start like Mr. Consistently Inconsistent gives us. Fortunately, Francisco Liriano was able to work out of the jam and the Yankees only put up one more run in the first inning. It was enough to make Sox fans feel defeated.

But fear not as Ivan Nova was also having a rough first inning. The Sox would get something going, but no runs would cross the plate. Then in the bottom of the second inning, some wonderful “fundamental” baseball got the Sox on the score sheet. In fourth inning Paul Konerko hit a solo shot to left field that tied the game up at two.

Things then got interesting in bottom of the fifth inning when Nova loaded the bases. Then, the night’s hero, Kevin Youkilis came to the plate. Youk hit a bomb to right field that had Nick Swisher dangling from the fence for a grand slam to put the Sox up by a score of 6-2. It was his third career grand slam (he had one earlier in the season against now teammate Philip Humber) and his 13th career home run against the Yankees. After taking the lead, Liriano was able to shut the Yankees down. He lasted for six innings, striking out seven, walking three and allowing six hits.

Jesse Crain then came in the game to relieve Liriano. He surrendered a solo shot to Russell Martin. For a brief moment, there was a question of whether the bullpen would let the lead slip away. They didn’t. After Jesse got those outs, Matt Thornton came in the game and got things done. Finally, Brett Myers came in to finish the job. By this point, the Sox had added another run in the bottom of the eighth inning as insurance after AJ Pierzynski hit a triple. Yes, AJ added another triple to his stat line this season. It started a tad shaky for Myers as he allowed a base runner, but he got the job done.

Tomorrow night, the Sox will try for the sweep. Chris Sale will battle Phil Hughes for supremacy.
