Well they couldn’t do it. The White Sox were unable to secure a series win against the Yankees on Old Timer’s day in the Bronx. The final score was 4-2 with the Yankees salvaging a split in the series.

Mr. Consistently Inconsistent just didn’t have it today. I’ll be honest, a part of me wondered if he was going to be doomed from the start because AJ Pierzynski was catching him today.

As much as we know that AJ and Dirt Bag have had differences and that seemingly Jake prefers Tyler Flowers, the same may be said about AJ and Gavin.  Today, there was some jawing between AJ and Gavin with some tense and “dirty” stares between the two. You may recall last season that there was the blowup after a game due to the inability yo throw runners out. And AJ had some choice words about Gavin and his speed to the plate. As much as AJ had a point about Gavin’s speed to the plate, I felt that AJ needed to take some responsibility given how he has a problem with ball transfer to even make a throw.

In any event, Gavin’s previous two starts were really good. He hadn’t given up any runs, had a season-high nine strikeouts in the last start, and moreover he had only walked one hitter. Oh and Tyler Flowers was catching him in both of those games. South Side Sox has a great article comparing what Floyd has done of late including with who is behind the plate in his games. Yes it is small sample size, but it does make you wonder, if perhaps the AJ / Gavin thing just doesn’t work and putting in Tyler in for Gavin’s starts is best for the team.

I am not generally one to think that pitchers should have a personal catcher, but in the case of Gavin, maybe it might be necessary. No matter today as the offense didn’t really do much today. Sure, the score was only 4-2 and the runs that Gavin gave up were of the long ball variety, but he did battle. The Sox had the chance to come back but they just didn’t. At least the road trip was successful with a 4-3 record. Tuesday the boys will be home to square off against the Texas Rangers. Hopefully they get on the winning track again.

Finally, congratulations to The King, Big Donkey and Chris Sale for making the AL All-Star roster! We all know The King should be a starter, but clearly fans of the Dirty Beast did a better job of stuffing the ballot than we did for first base.
