It’s now Tuesday…afternoon. The Sox started their four-game series with the Tigers last night. And I was probably the one White Sox fan who wasn’t watching the game.
This is not by choice, mind you. I was in Los Angeles for a wedding this weekend, and Monday was the day I was coming home. I was midflight when the game started. So obviously that meant I sprung for $5 wifi on my Southwest flight to follow Gameday and Twitter for updates.
Airplane wifi isn’t the greatest connection, so Gameday was slower than watching Paul Konerko run from first to third. Twitter refreshed relatively nicely, so all of you Sox fans who kept me up to speed, thank you!
To say “watching” the game on the plane was disappointing would be an understatement. I was already incredibly sad that I had to say goodbye to people, but the Sox got off to a bad start. Jose Quintana was giving up a lot of hits, but surprisingly not a lot of runs. By the time I got to baggage claim, it was 1-0 heading to the bottom of the sixth. I was not a happy camper.
As I waited…and waited…and waited…and waited for even one bag to come out, I kept checking the pitch-by-pitch on my phone. Kevin Youkilis struck out swinging. Lovely. Dewayne Wise…reached on an error. Oh look! A base runner! Paulie singled?! Yay! This is looking promising. Then again, things looked promising earlier in the game.
Oh look. Here come some bags on the baggage carousel. I’ve only been waiting 15 minutes for a glimpse of a bag. OH MY GOODNESS ALEX RIOS!!! SOX LEAD 3-1?! THANK YOU! My happiness is returning. AND NOW YOU TOO, AJ PIERZYNSKI?! This day is getting slightly better. Now if my bag would show…THERE IT IS! This never happens to me. Things are looking up right now.
Once I got in my dad’s car, I kindly requested immediately turned on 670 so I could listen to the game. Nothing terribly exciting when I was in the car listening, but once I got to Friday’s near my house and asked for the game to be put on, Gordon Beckham rewarded my patience with a two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth. Sox were up 6-1, and that’s how it would end.
From what I could gather via Twitter, pitch-by-pitch on my phone, the radio and then watching the end of the game, it was another nail biter. The Sox need this series, and they’re off to a nice start with that win. Tonight Jake Peavy faces off with Doug Fister. Fister has never pitched in Chicago as a Detroit Tiger, so hopefully that will work in our favor. Peavy is going for win number 11 tonight, so the bats need to back him up tonight. With last night’s win, the Sox sit three games ahead of the Tigers and have a magic number of 20 (for those who are keeping track).
