The Sound Tigers took their hated rivals to task in a home-and-home set, beating them 5-2 Wednesday at home, and then 3-0 on Thursday at the XL Center.

Both games saw Bridgeport take early leads in the first period. On Wednesday night, Nino Niederreiter and David Ullstrom were the night’s big heroes. Niederreiter scored Bridgeport’s first two goals, and Ullstrom earned four points (1 G, 3 A) in the game. New captain Colin McDonald and center Matt Watkins added to the lead, while Kevin Poulin made 25 saves.

On Thursday, ECHL points leader Chad Costello scored his first AHL goal, and Matt Donovan and John Persson extended the lead, while Poulin again had a sparkling start between the pipes with 36 saves and his first shutout of the season. Watkins and McDonald had two assists apiece for the Sound Tigers. Costello also recorded an assist and has points in each of his two games as a Sound Tiger since signing a professional tryout contract with Bridgeport.

The team  played Thursday’s game sans Niederreiter, who suffered an injury in the previous night’s game after a scrum in front of the net. He left the game during the first period and attempted to come back for the second, but went back into the locker room and did not return. The Sound Tigers’ Twitter reported that he took a high-stick during the stoppage.

Bridgeport plays next tomorrow night at home against the Monarchs at 7 p.m.
