Over a month before NHL Free Agency opens, it was announces today that Lightning forward Ryan Shannon has signed a three year deal with the ZSC Lions in Zurich. The Lions are part of the Swiss-A national league.
The Swiss team made the announcement on their website and the news is spreading around Twitter. The team hasn’t issued a formal announcement yet, but the Tampa Bay Times is reporting it.
Shannon signed with the Lightning last season, inking a 1 year contract valued at $625,000. There was hope that he would be able to see some work with the team’s top two lines, but that never seemed to materialize.
His season was marred by injuries. A knee injury saw him miss 15 games in December and January. His season was ended in March when he underwent surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff.
There’s no hard feelings on either end and Shannon had some extremely complimentary parting words for the Lightning and the city they play in.
“It’s a great place to play, a great hockey city and I’m not sure enough people know about that. … I wish them nothing but the best,” Shannon said. (Quote Source: Tampa Bay Times)
