Andreychuk Must Wait To Join Hall Of Fame… Again
This piece was written last year and unfortunately, it applies again for the 2012 Hockey Hall of Fame class. Some names have been changed, but the sentiment remains the same.
This year’s class of Hockey Hall of Fame Inductees were announced today and there were some pretty outstanding names among them. Joe Sakic, Adam Oates, Mats Sundin, and Pavel Bure.
Every one of those men deserve to be enshrined in the cathedral of the sport. On the other hand, there were quite a few notable omissions. Brendan Shanahan, Pat Burns, Jeremy Roenick, and former Lightning captain Dave Andreychuk.
Captain Dave is in his second third year of eligibility and I wouldn’t chalk it up to a snub from the HHOF committee, but it is a bit of an oddity. A few people have told me that he’ll definitely get in and I certainly hope they are right.
It was quite a strong group of candidates, but it makes me wonder if it will be the same argument that will be used again next year if there is no induction for Andy.
When it comes to numbers, it’s pretty much impossible to slight him. He played 1,700 games over 23 seasons and amassed 1338 points. Andreychuk is also the only 600+ goal scorer not in the Hall of Fame.
