Daily Kick Around: Rumor Sunday

What will is take for Arsene Wenger to change his philosophy?

It’s Sunday footy fans! Check out what’s happening today in the soccer world!

English Premier League

Looks like the loss of Robin van Persie has no affect on Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger. The frenchman refuses to change the way he runs the club by focusing on developing young talent rather than becoming a big-spending club. Wenger is modelling his Arsenal club after the 1990′d Ajax club, which had a very powerful academy, however it’s the frugal ways of Wenger’s philosophy that’s backtracking the success of the Gunners.

Don’t start customizing your LA Galaxy kits to say Lampard on the back. Chelsea player Frank Lampard is dismissing all rumors that he’s heading to the MLS after his contract at Stamford Bridge expires next year. Lampard was spotted at the Galaxy-Union match with his agent Steve Kutner, which began the rumor speculation. Lampard claims he was with his fiancee on holiday while Chelsea manager hints at a new contract offer for Lampard next season.

Serie A

Andrea Stramaccioni, manager of Inter Milan, suggested that he wouldn’t block the sale of Wesley Sneijder, if it came at a good price.

“Sneijder is fundamental from a technical and tactical point of view, but I can’t say that he is not for sale. That would be an abuse of my power. I would only ask the president to think carefully should an important offer arrive.”

La Liga

As of now, David Villa will remain at Barcelona. Paris Saint-Germain announced that they will not launch a bid for the striker this summer, even after weeks of a €30 million offer was anticipated.

Speaking of Barca, Seydou Kieta has quit as a blaugrana and will be heading to China. The new club? Dalian Aerbin. Kieta only started about half of Barca’s matches last season. He is to sign a 2.5 year deal with the Chinese side, joining Didier Drogba, Yakubu and Freddie Kanoute as the Far East’s recent imports.

Major League Soccer

Last night was a special night for fans of MLS soccer, especially supporters of the Seattle Sounders. It was the MLS debut for Steve Zakuani after his tragic injury that took place against the Colorado Rapids on April 24th, 2011.  Last night Zakuani was subbed on in the 84th minute, at home against, the Colorado Rapids. The Sounders won 2-1 and our own Liz Ibsen was at the match and wrote up a beautiful piece of lat night’s match. You can read it here.

Landon Donovan was selected in the MLS All-Star First XI for the 12th year in a row. The All-Star match will be on July 25th against European Champs, Chelsea FC at PPL Park is Chester, PA. For the rest of the First XI, click here!

Daily Kick Around: Tuesday Edition

Just because it’s Tuesday doesn’t mean there’s a break from the footy headlines! Today’s DKA brings you more Mario Balotelli drama, Arsene Wenger vs Fans, Carlos Tevez’s only options and a possible reunion between two former Real Madrid captains. Enjoy!

La Liga

Yesterday the Spanish FA (RFEF) decided to take no action in regards to Real Madrid’s Pepe stepping on Lionel Messi’s hand last week during the Copa del Rey quarterfinal match at the Santiago Bernabéu. The Spanish press had a field day, calling Pepe “shameful” and “a disgrace to the club.” With no punishment being taken, Pepe is free to play against Barcelona tomorrow for the second leg. That if manager Jose Mourinho lets him.

English Premier League

Arsene Wenger, you’ve pissed off the fans again. Szczesny & Chamberlain backed-up their manager after numerous boos towards the French manager were received during Arsenal’s 2-1 loss against Manchester United. Wenger substituted Chamberlain, who was playing a fantastic match, for the unfit Andrei Arshavin in the second half. Not only were supporters shaking their heads at the decision, but so was Arsenal captain Robin van Persie. Uh-oh.

It’s never-ending drama at Manchester City, who is deciding whether to appeal yesterday’s four match ban to Mario Balotelli for an apparent stomp on Scott Parker.

Carlos Tevez is not heading to PSG. The french club has ended negotiations with Tevez after a disagreement of terms. Looks like Tevez’s only options are AC Milan and Inter, the only clubs still interested.

Serie A

AC Milan’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic was announced the Best Player in Serie A at the Oscar el Calcio awards last night. The awards are voted by Serie A players for the league’s best player, coach, club and referee from the previous season. Ibrahimovic was also voted Best Foreign Player. Congratulazioni!

Inter Milan’s Wesley Sneijder claims he is staying at San Siro after rumors that he might be heading to Old Trafford in the transfer window. “I am in good shape and I feel well,” Sneijder said. “The future? I stay at Inter, I feel good here. How much is left until the end of this transfer window? A week, no? I’m staying here.”

Bundesliga

Schalke 04 has dismissed rumors of the club picking up former Real Madrid player Guti. Spanish magazine AS reported that Guti was in talks with the club but Schalke director Horst Heldt says there is no truth to it. Guti played with Schalke striker Raul in Madrid and even left Real Madrid at the same time as Guti was making the move to Besiktas. His contract was terminated in November and he is now a free agent. All I have to say is, I would freak out if my two favorite Real Madrid captains ever played together. Excuse me while I go fangirl.

Daily Kick Around: Saturday Edition

Hello soccer fans! There’s a lot of EPL action going on today! But whether you’re waiting between games, during half time or you’re waking up a little late, you can check out today’s footy headlines in the Daily Kick Around!

Major League Soccer

LA Galaxy fans are breathing a little easier this morning as the club has announced defender Omar Gonzalez has under gone successful surgery to repair his torn ACL. He’ll be out seven to nine months – nearly all of the 2012 MLS season – but doctors expect him to begin rehab later this month. Get well, Omar!

Former Houston Dynamo golden boy Brian Ching has finally broken his silence on his move to new expansion team, the Montreal Impact. The Dynamo did not place Ching on their protected player list for the expansion draft, and Ching had stated that if he was picked up, he would retire early. The Impact picked him up anyway, however. In a press conference Friday, Ching said,

“I decided that I want to retire on my own terms,” Ching said at a press conference on Friday. “I don’t want to be dictated into retirement and, honestly, I feel like I have another year of good soccer left in me.”

Good luck, Brian! I think you’re making a good move. And before any fans get mad at the Impact for picking him up, just remember, Houston left him unprotected, most likely because his salary would have dipped heavily into their salary cap.

Serie A

Wesley Sneijder, who has been out of the line up for Inter Milan since Nov. 2, is picking one of the most perfect times to come back to the field. Reports are coming that Sneijder’s name is listed in Inter’s line up for the big Milan derby clash Sunday against AC Milan. Definitely good news for Inter fans!

Speaking of come backs, AC Milan had good news for their fans as well. Antonio Cassano is expected to return to training Saturday after being sidelined for two months to recover from brain surgery. Cassano underwent the surgery after suffering cerebral trauma.

English Premier League

EPL has wrapped up the games for the day, and man was it a morning. Check out my recap of the Man United and Bolton game here. Scores from around the league can be found in the post too!

Every soccer league in the world strives to keep match fixers from their games. But unfortunately, there is match fixing in the world’s favorite sport; head of FIFA security Chris Eaton states even the EPL is victim. That didn’t sit well with Premier League boss Richard Scudamore, who said there is no match fixing in EPL and FIFA need to step up their efforts to battle the corruption.

Brazilian defender Alex, who hasn’t been in good graces at Chelsea for a while now, will be finding a new home with Queens Park Rangers. This comes on the heels of the fact that Chelsea will announce their gain of Gary Cahill from Bolton.

World Soccer

Tragic news out of LA as a high-school soccer player was gunned down on his front lawn this week after playing a game with his school. Francisco Rodriguez Jr. had just finished a game with his El Camino high school team, where he was a goalkeeper. Thoughts and prayers are with his family during this time.

The Daily Kick Around: Saturday Edition

Major League Soccer

A day after the announcement that Fox Soccer won the rights to broadcast the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, fans of MLS are still reacting skeptically about what this means for the U.S. league. However, Zak Wassink, a Yahoo Sports contributor, thinks everyone just needs to calm down.

This weekend marks the end of the regular season for MLS. L.A. Galaxy – who will take on Houston Dynamo for their final game – are comfortably leading the west with 67 points. However, the east is a contest to be decided between Sporting KC, Houston and the Columbus Crew. Playoffs will begin next week.

English Premier League

The debate of ridding the league of the regulation procedure continues, but Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore says it’s rubbish – hooray for British slang! He told Sky Sports recently it was ”nonsensical scare-mongering.” You don’t hear that in your every day conversation. Let’s hope he’s right.

Are you a part of the EPL fantasy league? Don’t know which players to place on your starting XI? Kevin McCauley of SB Nation is more than happy to tell you why Luis Suarez and other Liverpool players are good bets for your fantasy team.

La Liga

Real Madrid’s Angel Di Maria says the goal of the team is “to bring happiness to Real Madrid fans everywhere.” He also thinks the squad has improved under Jose Mourinho and hopes he’s proved himself worthy.

Barcelona’s acclaimed youth academy, La Masia, was recently revamped. The “New Masia” opened Thursday during a gala, complete with fireworks, that was broadcasted on Youtube.

Serie A

Roma is getting rather ambition. The Italian team’s general manager  Franco Baldini recently said he’d approached Barcelona boss Pep Guardiola in the summer to join the Serie A.

Inter Milan’s Wesley Sneijder insists he never wanted to head out of the Italian league nor was he tempted by Manchester United to move during the summer. Sneijder admitted that he feared he could have been released from the Italian giants due to “financial issues,” but felt more at ease once the season started.
