DKA: Who Will Pep Choose?

Good morning everybody! The future of Pep Guardiola is still unsure while Mourinho signs a 4 year extension, also we cover everything international with friendlies beginning before the Euros start. All in this morning’s DKA!

La Liga

With his departure from FC Barcelona, Pep Guardiola is open to job offers from other leagues, more-so offers from Liverpool and Chelsea. Even though Pep stated that he would take a season off to rest, his comeback could be sooner than expected.

“For the next months I have to charge my batteries,” he said. “I will rest and I will wait. I will be ready, if one club wants me, if they seduce me, I will train again.”

With a newly signed four-year contract, Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho has said that the club is the perfect challenge for him and his managing career.  Staying until 2016, Mourinho is thinking long-term with Real Madrid:

I’m delighted to stay on and plan the sporting future of Real Madrid’s first team, and we know we must obviously focus more on the short term and talk little about the distant future.”

Congratulations to FC Barcelona on winning the Copa del Rey final against Athletic Bilbao on Friday after a 3-nil victory!

English Premier League

I ask you one thing footy fans. What’s more important, club or country? Just ask Johan Djourou, who was asked by his Switzerland coach to step down from Arsenal FC. Ottmar Hitzfeld has urged Djourou, who has 14 starts in the 2011-2012 campaign, to consider his future with the Gunners if he wants to be a part of the Switzerland NT. Generally, players get called up to the national team by the amount of play time they receive at their clubs. Djourou is barely getting playtime and is by far, Switzerland’s best player. But unfortunately for Djourou, he signed a contract extension, good until 2015.

International Friendlies

With Euro 2012 kicking off in 12 days, a lot of national teams are beginning their international matches in preparation for Euros & the Olympics.

Over the weekend, former Welsh national team player and current head coach Gary Speed was found dead of an apparent suicide. The 42-year old former soccer star and manager was beloved by the soccer community, and tributes have been pouring in ever since the news of his death.

English Premier League

In the Manchester City-Liverpool match yesterday, the always controversial Mario Balotelli was sent off after accumulating two yellow cards within 18 minutes of subbing on. Now, City manager Roberto Mancini is saying that Liverpool players are to blame for Balotelli’s second yellow.

Aside from the antics of Balotelli, City has also been dealing with striker Carlos Tevez, who is still somewhere in Argentina, refusing to come back to the English club. It is expected that Tevez will leave City in January during the transfer window, but some teams — like Juventus — have been saying, “No thanks”

Midfielder Zoltan Gera’s return to West Brom has been cut short, at least for now. Gera suffered a serious knee injury during this weekend’s match against Tottenham, and will be out for the foreseeable future. Bad news for the Baggies!

Major League Soccer

A new sports network is set to hit our televisions in 2012: Versus will be re-branded as NBC Sports Network. Promos are already popping up, like this one featuring several LA Galaxy players. This is great news for MLS fans, as it can only mean more soccer televised nationally.

DC United has released their new 2012 home and away kits. Check them out here!

Serie A

On Sunday, AC Milan took apart Chievo with a 4-0 victory. But the exciting headline was that Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored his 100th Serie A goal, quite the accomplishment!

USMNT

Carlos Bocanegra, aka Captain America, could be sidelined for at least two weeks with a hamstring injury that he picked up playing for his club Rangers F.C. Hopefully the USMNT fearless leader will be back in action soon!

Former Wales international player and current Welsh manager Gary Speed was found dead today of an apparent suicide. The news sent shock waves through the entire football community, many posting on Twitter about the devastating loss of the former footballer.

Even more tragedy has struck the footy world, when six players from Togo were killed in a bus accident on Saturday. The bus was carrying the team when it plunged into a ravine and caught fire. Along with the six who were killed, another 28 were injured in the crash.

Steering away from the sad and tragic, there’s a very cool story from the American Samoa men’s national team. Jonny Saelua — a transgender player — helped lead the team to it’s first international victory last Tuesday. Read about Saelua’s role in the World Cup Qualifier win, and how she became the first transgender player to compete on a World Cup stage.

Just one week since winning the MLS Cup, the LA Galaxy are already back to work. The team took at 17 hour flight last night to Indonesia, where they will be playing the first of three games on their Asia Pacific Tour 2011. The team will play three matches in three different countries over the next two weeks.

If you haven’t already seen it, here is the MLS Cup 2011 MatchDay 360 video. It’s a must-watch production — I’ve already viewed it a dozen times.

A lot went down in the Spanish league yesterday. Real Madrid put up a decisive 4-1 victory over Atletico Madrid, and footy giant Barcelona lost a shocker to middle-of-the-table Getafe, 1-0. It was Barca’s first loss since April.
