DKA: Euro 2012 Hang Over

Is anyone else feeling like something is missing in their lives? I mean, now that June is over and Euro 2012 gone with it, the days at work are boring all over again. And hello, who misses Michael Ballack and Alexi Lalas bickering while Taylor Twellman sat back and laughed about it?  I definitely do. But it’s okay, we’ve got plenty of headlines for you in today’s Daily Kick Around!

Euro 2012

Welp, it’s time to close out the Euro discuss, and Simon Borg wants to make sure it goes out with a bang. Today, he had twitter and the MLS offices in a heated debate about the final – he believes Spain should have made a good gesture and taken a player off to make the game against Italy 10 v. 10. What do you think?

Major League Soccer

L.A. Galaxy fans are probably feeling great today as Omar Gonzalez trained with the first team again and could make a come back in late July.

Remember that kick ass tifo fans had during the game against Portland and Seattle? You gotta check out the video of how they made it!

English Premier League

Yet another member of the Arsenal organization has assured media and fans that star striker Robin Van Persie isn’t going anywhere during the summer transfer. The rumor has been RVP would be headed to Italian side, Juventus.

U.S. Women’s National Team

I don’t know about you guys, but I love Megan Rapinoe. I’ve always thought she was kick ass and a great soccer player for our women’s national team. Today, she came out to Out Magazine, and its a great interview. You should definitely check it out! Much respect to Pinoe!

DKA: Real Madrid Get the Crown; Borg Uproar in MLS

Well it’s finally Thursday soccer fans!! One league title is pretty much wrapped up after yesterday’s games and MLS teams had an interesting midweek battle. Also, there’s an Italian manager in trouble for attacking a player and the USMNT adds another date to their friendlies this year. Here’s your Daily Kick Around!

La Liga

They’ve done it! Yesterday after their 3-0 win against Bilbao, Real Madrid – unofficially – could call themselves champions of La Liga. To say it’s been an easy road to get here would be an understatement. It’s the 32nd league title for the Spanish giants and our own Tamara Reinhart, hardcore Madridista, has the run down of the match and some very excited Real Madrid players.

Major League Soccer

What a night for midweek soccer! Have you heard of this San Jose team? If you haven’t, you need to get with the program! The Quakes are on FIRE this season, and they added another win to the tally last night as they notched 5 goals to D.C. United’s 3. The Seattle v. L.A. rivalry heated up last night too, with the Sounders finally coming out on the plus side against the defending MLS Cup champs; Eddie Johnson and Fredy Montero each hit the back of the net to finish off the Galaxy 2-0. New England and Colorado faced off last night too and it would be the Revs that would get the three points, beating the Rapids 2-1.

If you are wondering what in the heck is going on with this Simon Borg guy, check out my post from earlier this week about his remarks that MLS female “super fans” might be unappealing to the opposite sex. Fortunately, MLS responded to his remarks and suspended him for seven days. There’s been a lot of talk from both sides on this issue, and I’ll wrap up my opinion by saying this – diverse opinions and debate in the league is a good thing, it’s what you want. But to be diverse, you don’t have to lash out at half of your fan base. And just because Borg has a reputation for saying remarks such as the ones he uttered April 30 doesn’t make it right to let him continue.

English Premier League

Chelsea may be in the final of the Champion’s League, but they are definitely on the outside looking in when it comes to the EPL. Newcastle defeated the Blues Wednesday 2-0 and it’s quite possible Chelsea will finish below the fourth spot for the first time in 10 years. While it’s clear the club has something – they are in the CL finals after all – it looks like there is still a little struggling at Stamford Bridge.

Serie A

Fiorentina manager Delio Rossi landed in hot water with his club recently when he apparently went after one of his players and slapped him! During Fiorentina’s match with Novara, Rossi subbed out Serbian forward Adem Ljajic. When Ljajic complained about the substitution, Rossie physically attacked him for the remark. While the manager said he would apologize, the power that be at Fiorentina fired him. Can’t say I wouldn’t blame them.

U.S. Men’s National Team

If you are USMNT fan in the midwest, get excited! The team will be back in Columbus, FINALLY, taking on Jamaica Sept. 11 at Columbus Crew Stadium. As a USMNT fan and a Crew fan, I have to say, I’m really excited about this match up!

MLS Women Are NOT Hot? – UPDATE

UPDATE: Wednesday, May 2 – Apparently last night, after all the uproar, MLS took down the podcast of the April 30 show with Borg’s comments. Just this morning, the show was reposted, but it was edited and included an apology.

12:14 p.m. CT – MLS released this official statement over the response to Borg’s comments.

Anyone know Simon Borg? Anyone? Anyone? Well, if you’re a diehard of MLS, you are probably familiar with the writer and editor of the league’s web site. He also co-hosts MLS’ official podcast, Extra Time Radio. And listen up ladies, on Monday he had a few choice words for us at the end of the show.

As the talking began to wind down on the hour-long podcast, the hosts were answering emails about balancing soccer and love lives …. okay, whatever. As the guys go through the emails, one male fan reported from Kansas City about seeing a number of female fans in the stands and how he felt soccer games were more of a date night with “many happy couples leaving the stadium together.” This seemed very promising.

Then the hosts started to answer “a few tweets from the ladies out there.” And here is where the pot started to boil. Borg even said what he was going to say was going to be unpopular – should have stopped him there, but oh well. He decided to voice his opinion on the apparent two groups of female soccer fans. Because we can’t just be fans ladies, we are either casual fans who know very little about the game or we’re Borg’s “Superfans,” who live and breathe soccer. If you feel the need to go listen to Monday’s broadcast, head on over to Extra Time’s Web site. But if you don’t want to listen to the ending drabble – and who could blame you – here’s what ol’ Simon said at about the 59 minute mark.

“It’s fine if you want to be a ‘super fan’ and you are a female. That’s fine, that’s your choice. But there is something to be said about how appealing that might be to the other sex. Just having a woman that’s such a fan, painting your face, tuning into every podcast … I don’t know how many males are into that.”

It’s cool for women to be into it. But for the guy that wants to be in a serious relationship, do you really want that? … But if you are such a die-hard, there might be a point where that becomes a turn off.”

The IRONY here, really, is that the emails read by the hosts from male fans BEFORE Borg’s remarks discussed having girlfriends that weren’t fans and the troubles they encountered because their female partners did not share the same love of the beautiful game as they did.

So, I’m confused. Guys want a girl to not nag them about their passion for sports, but we can’t be as passionate about the sport as them? I think ol’ Simon needs a bit of a reality check here. And on the matter of “casual fan” and “super fan” … I don’t know ANY casual soccer fans! It’s not possible, trust me. You get sucked into the beautiful game and that’s it, you’re hooked for life.

To me, it sounds like someone is intimidated. Do we really know that or not? No. But lashing out at a fan base that’s helping to grow the league – remember, Borg is not a journalist, he is employed by Major League Soccer - doesn’t seem like the best way to go about it. Now, I’m reasonable. I’m sure Borg didn’t go into that show wanting to turn the female MLS fan base against him. But it’s a steep lesson in “think before you speak.” How can women fans not take offense to his remarks?

Fortunately though, the majority of the male fan base doesn’t seem to share Borg’s thoughts. There have been many guys stepping up, stating how their significant others being soccer “super fans” is hot. And the single guys are agreeing too – a woman who knows the sport and is passionate about it is pretty hot.

And of course, women fans of the league have not been meek and mild about what they think of Borg’s comments. Women’s United Football Club – a Web site started to unite women MLS fans – was all over the situation too. So much so that Borg tweeted “if there’s anything left to talk about,” the founders of the site were more than welcome to be guests on Extra Time to discuss the issue. Aww, how sweet of him.

Don’t worry Simon. There’s plenty still to talk about. And by the way MLS, the ladies of Aerys Soccer hope that you realize if you want to grow the game in the states, you’re going to have to include everyone. Even the women.
