DKA: Goals, goals, goals!

I feel like I say this all the time lately about the weekend, but man was it jammed pack with a lot! The England v. Italy quarter final in the Euros, tons of MLS rivalries kicking off and tons more. Check out the headlines in today’s Daily Kick Around!

Major League Soccer

Damn, was week 16 of MLS amazing! We saw the comeback of LA Galaxy, San Jose take over in the west and THREE huge rivalry match ups. By the end of the week, teams would tally 52 goals. 52!! Check out this awesome video show casing them all from Kick TV!

Euro 2012

It was a hell of a drawn out game between Italy and England this weekend in the last quarter final match up. It went to penalties and as I said before, Pirlo’s for Italy was cheeky. You have to admire it because, well, just watch in case you missed it.

English Premier League

It seems pretty obvious after a player performs in a major tournament, rumors start to fly about where they will go or what teams are interested. It seems like Arsenal’s Nicklas Bendtner is no exception to the rule. After his performance with Denmark, Bendtner’s agent says “the interest is overwhelming.” Hmmm.

Joey Barton, tsk tsk. After his loss of control in Queens Park Rangers’ last game against Manchester City, the club have officially stripped him of his captaincy and fined him for his actions. He also is sitting at home while the team tour in Asia next month. Just goes to show you kids, keep your temper in check.

Scottish League

The woes for the Glasgow Rangers continues. The Crown office has announced they will open an investigation into Craig Whyte’s stake of Rangers which he required last May. It’s even worse for Rangers’ fans as the club are going to probably be denied a return to the Scottish Premier League. And for those of you keeping taps, USMNT captain and Rangers’ player Carlos Bocanegra is rumored to be heading out, maybe back to MLS. New England Revolution are a top the allocation list and have first dibs, by the way.

DKA: Crazy In The EPL

Well footy fans, the domestic seasons may be over in Europe, but that doesn’t mean things aren’t still crazy in England. Redknapp is still running his mouth, rumors about RVP still abound and that’s just in EPL! Check out all the headlines in your Tuesday Daily Kick Around!

English Premier League

Ivan Gazidis, chief executive of Arsenal, has revealed there was a “good discussion” between the club and Robin Van Persie recently about the striker’s future with the club. As you probably know, the rumor RVP is head out of the club has been rising as of late. The contents of the conversation are being kept under wraps, but in an announcement on the club’s Web site, it was clear Gazidis was happy with the outcome.

Welp, Tottenham’s boss Harry Redknapp opened his mouth again and maybe he should have inserted his foot. Today on Sky Sports News, in his weird little way to ease the fears of fans about players leaving over the club missing out on the Champions League, Redknapp said,

“I think it’s overrated what people say about Champions League football and whatever … People would have still gone to Chelsea if they hadn’t won the Champions League this year because they know it’s a club that’s looking to get into the Champions League positions next year.”

What do you think?

I don’t know if Liverpool fans are excited or indifferent to this news, but it seems Joe Cole will be back with the Reds next season after spending this past year with French side Lille. Cole came to Liverpool from Chelsea on a free transfer and didn’t do too much for the Reds. Liverpool fans, what do you think about Joe coming back?

Oh Joey Barton. It just doesn’t really stop with you, does it? It was reported yesterday that Barton was assaulted outside a Liverpool nightclub in the wee hours of Sunday morning. Barton supposedly dropped charges, but two 21-year-old men are being detained by police.

DKA: Klinsmann Names his Men (And Yes, Herc is One of Them)

It has been yet another eventful weekend in the world of soccer.  Chelsea are the new Kings of Europe.  U.S. fans are debating the inclusions and exclusions for the May USMNT training camp.  Check out what else is up in today’s DKA.

USMNT

Jurgen Klinsmann rounded out his training camp Sunday with 11 more call-ups, including 5 additional MLSers (Geoff Cameron, Landon Donovan, Juan Agudelo, Chris Wondolowski and Graham Zusi) and, at long last, Herculez Gomez.  Check out the full training camp roster here.

Did you know that Landon Donovan could have played soccer for Canada?  He revealed in an interview with FIFA.com that he is half-Canadian!  Fortunately for us American fans, he stuck with the good ol’ U.S. of A.

Mexican Primera División

Speaking of Herculez Gomez, he became the first U.S. player to win both an MLS Cup and a Mexican league championship when Santos Laguna defeated Monterrey on Sunday in the 2nd game of the final to secure their fourth Mexican first-division title.  I think it is safe to say that Herc is on a roll; also, he has no more need of his playoff beard.

English Premier League

Despite having just won the UEFA Champions League with Chelsea, Fernando Torres is not entirely happy, having been denied both a starting spot for the final and taking a penalty kick in the deciding shoot out.  He has even called his club out in the media, demanding that he know what his role is so he can decide if it is worth it for him to stay.

When Chelsea won the Champions League final on Saturday, they knocked Tottenham Hotspur out of the fourth Champions League spot.  As such, it may be more difficult for the Spurs to hold onto some of their big name players.  Despite rumors of a Gareth Bale transfer, former Tottenham player Alan Mullery doubts the Spurs will let him go easily.

FIFA

Today is the 108th birthday of the Fédération Internationale de Football Association.  I guess they have earned the right to brag on themselves a little bit!

Tweet to Start the Week

According to the infamous Joey Barton (yes, the head-butting, elbow-throwing Joey Barton of Queens Park Rangers), today is National Dullard Day.  Maybe it’s an English thing?  More likely just a Joey Barton thing.  The man is a character, you have to give him that.

DKA: Drama In The Premier League

Good morning footy fans! It’s a lovely Tuesday filled with tons of Premier League & La Liga news as controversy hits and transfer rumors begin! We have more Joey Barton & Carlos Tevez drama, an EPL player gets arrested, a legend is retiring and is Falcao heading to Chelsea? All in today’s DKA!

English Premier League

QPR’s Joey Barton was charged with two charges today by the FA for violent misconduct following his dismissal against Manchester City on Sunday. After receiving a red card for elbowing Carlos Tevez, Barton also came in contact with Sergio Agüero & Vincent Kompany, being pulled away by Mario Balotelli. Apparently Barton has until 6pm GMT time to appeal any or all the charges against him. Good luck with that.

It’s never a dull moment when it comes to Manchester City, especially when Carlos Tevez is around. But sure enough, Tevez strikes back, creating a whirlwind of controversy around his celebration sign. The sign, which Tevez held up during the celebration parade for Man City’s title win, read ‘RIP Fergie.” Tevez later issued an apology directed towards Manchester United and Sir Alex Ferguson for his actions saying:

”I got carried away in the excitement of the moment and I certainly didn’t mean any disrespect to Sir Alex Ferguson, who I admire as a man and a manager.”

You’d think that Tevez would have the knowledge to NOT hold that sign up in the air, even if it was from a City supporter. But then again, Tevez doesn’t know the meaning of ‘common sense.’

Both Ryan Giggs & Sir Alex Ferguson of Manchester United were awarded two awards for their dominance in the Premier League. Fergie was named Best manager in the Premier League while Giggs won Best Player. Sir Alex beat out Arsene Wenger, Jose Mourinho, Harry Redknapp and David Moyes for the award. Congratulations!

Stoke midfielder Jermaine Pennant was given an eight-week jail sentence, suspension for a year plus a 3-year driving disqualification after admitting to drunk driving in April.

La Liga

Málaga’s Ruud van Nistelrooy announced his retirement from football yesterday after helping his club reach a Champions League spot in next season’s competition. RVN has played with two of football’s greatest clubs like Manchester United where he scored 150 goals in 219 appearances before heading to Real Madrid, winning two La Liga titles. Currently van Nistelrooy is the Champions League’s all-time second highest scorer with 56 goals to back him up. In a press conference RVN stated:

“Yesterday was my final game as a professional footballer. I wanted to play in the Champions League, but it is the moment to leave. I have arrived at my physical limit and I can’t play at the maximum level. I couldn’t have had a better send-off than this. I feel happy that I am the one taking this decision. I would like to thank Malaga, the technical and medical staff for an unforgettable year. I am proud to have won collective and individual titles, but my greatest satisfaction was to be able to work day after day, year after year.”

Good news for Real Madrid supporters as Karim Benzema has made the bold statement claiming that he would love to end his career playing at the Santiago Bernabéu. The French International had a lot of help from former Real Madrid player & football legend, Zinedine Zidane in getting acclimated to life in Spain. Now if only Gonzalo Higuaín would say the same thing…

Transfer rumors are already hitting La Liga as the newest comes from Atlético Madrid. Reports circulated that Chelsea FC was looking to swap Fernando Torres for Radamel Falcao. Chelsea manager, Roberto Di Mattero has dismissed the allegations saying that he believes Torres will be wearing blue for another season.

Manchester City Are The EPL Champions

Photo via sportinglife.com

Unbelievable. That’s one word you could use to describe, not only how the EPL season ended, but also how Manchester City won their first league title since 1968.  They did it, at home, by coming back to win 3-2 against QPR.

Manchester City got off to a slow start, just like they had against Newcastle United. It was getting close to half time and the City-QPR game was still scoreless. City needed to score soon, as Manchestr United had already scored against Sunderland. At the 39th minute, City fans finally got the goal they were waiting for. Pablo Zabaleta scored the first goal of the game, as well as his first goal of’f the season, to give City a 1-0 lead as they headed into half time.

The second half got off to a good start, when City came close to scoring their second goal within a few minutes. However, a few City mistakes ended up leading to QPR equalizing in the 48th minute, with the goal being scored by Djibril Cisse.

The drama would continue as Joey Barton, who was slightly provoked by Carlos Tevez, elbowed Tevez in the face and was sent off immediately in the 55th minute. Barton decided to lash out on Tevez’s teammate Sergio Aguero, and hit him. As Barton was walking out, Mario Balotelli was one of the players who tried to calm him down. In my opinion, that was a disgraceful thing for the footballer to do – he had already been sent off for his elbow on Tevez, but to take it out on another player like that? Thre’s no excuse for that.

QPR would have to play a man down for the next 30+ minutes. At the 59th minute, Aguero almost gave City the lead, but the ball didn’t cross the line, so it wasn’t counted. It looked like QPR would have a tough time playing 10 v. 11, but in the 66th minute, surprising everyone, Jamie Mackie scored and gave QPR the lead. Even though, QPR was playing a man down, they were now up 2-1 against City.

It was looking more and more likely that Manchester United would win their 20th league title. QPR was doing a great job of defending; after all, they were playing to stay in EPL and not get relegated. At the 90th minute, the score was still 2-1 in QPR’s favor. However, thanks to what had happened with Barton earlier, 5 minutes of additional time were added on. Nobody, including me, believed that City would be able to score 2 goals in the next 5 minutes.

In fact, United players and their fans had already started celebrating what would’ve been their 20th league title. In the 1st  minute of added time, Edin Dzeko scored the equalizing goal. No one really celebrated though, because only a win would be good enough. Two minutes later, Sergio Aguero scored one of the biggest goals of his Manchester City career. City was now up 3-2 and the stadium went crazy. They had finally won the league title.

City would go on to win the title, while United was in 2nd place. A few weeks ago, if you had asked me if I thought City would win, I would have said no way. United had an 8-point lead, but City fought back and won in one of the craziest ways imaginable. Not only were City fans excited about this win, but so were fans of other clubs, like Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea etc. It was about time that someone else had won the title.

City won the league double, beating United 6-1 at Old Trafford and 1-0 at home. Now with the league title, Manchester, at least for this season, was blue.

Daily Kick Around: Monday Edition

It’s a new week, footy fans! If you’re like me, you’re probably still thinking about that crazy comeback Manchester United pulled off against Chelsea yesterday. What a game! But there is already so much to talk about today, I’m not sure where to start. We’ve got a couple of spotlight pieces on young American players, David Beckham’s most recent red card ejection, and Joey Barton’s Twitter comments that may get him in legal trouble! All that and more, here’s your Daily Kick Around.

Major League Soccer

As preseason is now in full swing, soccer writers across America are giving us a closer look at some of the new rising stars in MLS. ESPN’s Leander Schaerlaeckens profiled Sporting KC’s C.J. Sapong. The 2011 MLS Rookie Of The Year has been a surprise success in professional soccer–an underdog–and that’s just the way he likes it.

Not only have the young players like Sapong been making a splash in MLS, but a recent influx of foreign players have been making an impact in the league too. In 2010 and 2011, only 55 percent of available game minutes were played by Americans, the lowest percentage of any two year span. Is this good or bad for the league? Matthew Doyle gives us his perspective.

Since re-signing with the LA Galaxy, superstar David Beckham has already received a red card. Yes, you are reading that correctly: Beckham has managed to be ejected from a game before the season has even begun! Of course, it was at a youth soccer game, but still, I’m sure his Galaxy teammates will give him a little bit of grief for it! All in good fun.

English Premier League

Emmanuel Frimpong’s loan to Wolverhampton was cut short after the midfielder suffered a serious knee injury on Saturday. Frimpong ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, and has returned to Arsenal to receive treatment in London. He will be out for the rest of the season.

Joey Barton is known to speak his mind, both on the pitch and off. This time, his comments on Twitter in reference to the John Terry racism case nearly got him in big trouble. He was almost found in contempt of court, but the Attorney General’s office today said Barton is in the clear. Still, maybe he’ll think twice before making similar comments in the future. Then again, he probably won’t.

La Liga

Lionel Messi is arguably the best soccer player in the world, but the confidence fans and coaches alike have in him today wasn’t always there. At first, Barcelona was not sure if Messi would succeed as a professional in Europe. Luckily for Messi, there were a few people who had faith in his skills despite his lack of size. Read more about the incredible story of how Messi signed with Barcelona here.

Speaking of Barcelona players, check out this video of Cesc Fabregas testing out his athletic skills in a different sports venue: baseball batting practice. He’s got a bit of an awkward swing!

Daily Kick Around: Saturday Edition

Hey did you catch that 14-0 USWNT game last night? Did you hear about Danny Cruz heading to D.C. United? Or that Roma is holding off on talks with Daniele De Rossi? Never fear, we got the headlines here in your Saturday Daily Kick Around!

U.S. Women’s National Team

You might still be rubbing your eyes if you caught the USWNT’s game against the Dominican Republic last night. You might still be rubbing them if you saw the score this morning. You aren’t dreaming. The score really was 14-0. Check out my run down of all the goals here!

English Premier League

Soccer is taking another step in the U.S. as Fox Sports will broadcast the Arsenal v. Manchester United match tomorrow on their main channel, which reaches 114.7 million viewers.

After a barrage of criticisms on Twitter from Joey Barton, former Queens Park Rangers boss Neil Warnock says he’s disappointed in the player, but he won’t get into a “war of words” with him. Apparently things are in a bit of turmoil at QPR.

Tons of games wrapped up this morning in the EPL; Fulham had a massive score of 5-2 over Newcastle and Bolton will face off with Liverpool this afternoon. But it’s the scoreline of 0-0 between Chelsea and Norwich City that has many fans talking this morning.

Major League Soccer

The Houston Dynamo are still moving and switching up their roster for the next season. Yesterday they announced a deal between them and D.C. United that would see young Danny Cruz making a moving to D.C.

A month or so ago, D.C. United’s Santino Quaranta said he was hanging up his boots. Apparently, he didn’t like retirement too much. Reports are coming in that he will now be heading to India to a new six-team league that’s started up in the country. Hmmm.

Serie A

AC Milan have let go of left back Taye Taiwo on loan to EPL side Queens Park Rangers. The defensive player has fought to get in the starting line up for Milan, and this loan could be a precursor for a more permanent move out of Italy.

After the past few months of talks and speculation, Roma boss Luis Enrique said he’s going to put contract talks with Italian midfielder Daniele De Rossi on hold, seeing as Roma still has him for 18 months. De Rossi was doubtful for the team’s game against Cesena today.

Ready for your Daily Kick Around? Today we have a bus-surfing French women’s national team, players quash rumors on Twitter and lots more! Check it out!

International

The France Women’s National Team had a little too much fun on their bus trip after qualifying for the 2012 Olympics with a victory against England. Bus surfing anyone?

La Liga

Real Sociedad goalkeeper Enaut Zubikarai made a huge mistake in yesterday’s Copa del Rey match against Mallorca in the second round. It was only the 4th match this season that Zubikarai has played in net, all of which were Sociedad’s CdR matches, and after a mistake like that, it might be a while before he backs up his club. Note to all keepers out there: Make sure there is no one behind you when your about to kick the ball out of your box.

Earlier in the week during the Catalan Derby between Barcelona and Espanyol, there were racial remarks towards Barca player Dani Alves by a section of supporters. Espanyol boss Mauricio Pochettino says otherwise. The Brazil international claimed that he hadn’t heard any racial remarks from the crowd because he was more focused on the match. Anyone else getting tired of all these racism accusations lately? I know I am.

Congrats to Real Madrid player Gonzalo Higuain on being with the club for 5 years! He played his first match with the white 5 years ago today against Betis in the Copa del Rey. So far in his career with Madrid, he’s the fourth captain, won two league titles in 2007 and 2008, one Copa del Rey in 2011 and one Spanish Super Cup in 2008.

English Premier League

After Arsenal legend Thierry Henry made his debut with the Gunners since 2006 on Monday, rumors began that other Gunner legends could make a return to the club. But not so fast! Robert Pires, who is currently training with the Gunners, slammed down any speculation via his twitter account, of a possible return to Emirates. Pires, who left Aston Villa in May, is still in a search for a club, preferably one in Asia.

New Queens Park Rangers manager Mark Hughes claimed that Joey Barton will remain club captain despite the controversy surrounding his career.

Apparently there is some mis-communication between Newcastle’s Demba Ba and his “agent” Armand Doorn. The 26-year-old Ba took to his twitter account attacking Doorn about his remarks that Manchester United were interested in picking up Ba in the January transfer window. The tweet? “Really, I don’t know how desperate this “armand doorn” can be to talk like he’s my agent!! He’s nothing for me. Stop lying and show respect.”

Serie A

Lazio midfielder Lorik Cana will be sidelined for about two months with a back injury. During Lazio’s 4-nil defeat of Siena, Cana was forced off during halftime, confirming through tests that he has a damaged lumbar vertebrae. With this injury, the Albanian will miss 10 Serie A matches including their Europa League match against Atletico Madrid.

Major League Soccer

The Chicago Fire has signed Uruguayan forward Federico Puppa two days after signing Colombian midfielder Rafael Robayo. This is good news for the Fire due to the international experience that Puppa has, moving well off the ball and finishing strong in front of the net.

Goodbye Robbie Rogers! The Ex-Columbus Crew midfielder has signed a new deal with English club Leeds United until 2014. That’s of course, if he can get his hands on a work permit. Rogers doesn’t meet the national team cap percentage needed to score a work permit, but Leeds seems overly confident that the Huntington Beach native can get one. Leeds beat out another MLS (who was undisclosed) club, a secret English club, and even a return offer from the Crew. All I have to say is good luck to Robbie in England! He now joins the ranks of Mike Grella, Eddie Lewis, Eric Lichaj and England Youth International Paul Rachubka as the 5th American-born player to suit up for Leeds.

Decisions and Missed Opportunities Come Back to Haunt Rangers

By Sophie Bowen

QPR were denied their second home win of the season after Baggies top scorer Shane Long rescued a point for Roy Hodgson’s men Saturday.  Rangers got an unexpected goal after 20 minutes when in-form striker Heidar Helguson nodded home a goal for the R’s. But West Brom fought back to claim a point.

Albion began the brightest. James Morrison tried his luck with a low drive at goal that had Radek Cerny at full stretch, but the midfielder’s shot flashed just wide.

At the other end, Jamie Mackie saw off two challenges down the right before cutting the ball back to the edge of the area where Shaun Wright-Phillips was waiting; but his shot went just wide of the target.

QPR were on the attack once more. Alejandro Faurlin’s pass found Armand Traore on the left, whose subsequent ball into Joey Barton saw the R’s skipper fire an effort straight at keeper Ben Foster.

The R’s breakthrough finally came with 20 minutes gone. Fan favorite Mackie burst into the box and executed a teasing lob in the direction of Helguson, who made no mistake when he guided his header into the top right-hand corner.

Minutes later, Rangers thought they’d added a second. This time, Faurlin found Wright-Phillips, who danced past his marker to fire a stunning effort into the top right-hand corner of the net.

Fans celebrations were cut short after the effort was pulled back for offside, however replays proved that decision was incorrect.

The goal clearly gave the home side a lift as they were given the perfect opportunity to double their lead before the break.

Helguson’s ball into the box was deflected up into the path of an unmarked Wright-Phillips. With Foster some way of his line , he could only nod an effort wide. However minutes later the R’s missed arguably a greater chance to pull further clear of Albion.

Barton’s challenge with his marker saw the ball deflect into the path of Helguson, who put the skipper through on goal. Barton advanced toward the goal before attempting to guide the ball over an advancing Ben Foster, but his effort went agonizingly wide of the right-hand post.

After the break, Albion came out fighting and nearly got their just rewards. Gareth McAuley rose highest to meet James Morrison’s in-swinging free-kick, but his header went wide of the target.

The Baggies nearly handed Rangers their second goal on a plate as the ball bounced around the penalty area. But Wright-Phillips, Mackie and Helguson all couldn’t find the space to get a shot away.

Jay Bothroyd found Traore down the left before the full-back rounded Foster, who strayed to the edge of the box. But rather than  finishing, Traore squared to Wright-Phillips but he couldn’t capitalize on the opportunity to find an open goal.

As the half wore on both teams looked up for the challenge and play switched from end to end. West Brom levelled ten minutes later on the counter attack. Morrison’s driving run saw the Baggies midfield man skip past challenges from both Akos Buzsacky and Faurlin, before he fed Peter Odemwingie.

The Albion striker looked up before firing a low ball.  It deflected into the path Shane Long, who couldn’t miss from three yards to earn his side a point.

After the game, Rangers Manager Neil Warnock could not help but feel his side were undone by a poor refereeing decision once again. He said, “The linesman was in a great position and I can’t understand why he didn’t see it.

“We’ve missed out again because of a major decision. It was a superb volley and if it had been 2-0 I don’t think there would have been a way back for West Brom. You rely on the right decisions being made, and it makes it even more frustrating to then concede a goal – especially after creating so many chances.”

However Warnock knows the game and will pick his team up for their trip to Anfeild next week.

“It’s so disappointing it feels like we lost the game, but that’s the Premier League. I can’t fault the players really. I’ve got no complaints other than the fact we missed some chances and conceded that goal. What I said to Ale Faulin afterwards stays between me and him. But you can’t blame him – I thought him and Joey Barton were absolutely outstanding.”

Carling Cup Tournament

Tuesday’s Quarterfinal Results:

Arsenal 0 – 1 Man City

Chelsea 0 – 2 Liverpool

Cardiff 2 – 0 Blackburn

Today, Manchester United host Crystal Palace at 2:45pm ET

English Premier League

Didier Drogba has refused a one year contract extension from Chelsea and an AC Milan offer to join them on loan with the option to buy.  In the likelihood that David Beckham leaves the LA Galaxy, Drogba has been considered a tasty replacement, and may be  holding out for an offer from the southern California club.  Drogba’s manager bluntly stated that the 33 year old striker will go “where he is offered the most money”.

Considered one of the best strikers in Europe, Lille’s Moussa Sow has expressed a keen interest in a move to the EPL. His current contract with Lille has stalled and Sow has mentioned Arsenal as a team he might like to join.  This might be a wise investment for the Gunners and give RVP some much-needed rest.

Joey Barton is in the news again, this time for his insensitive remarks concerning the death of Wales manager, Gary Speed.  The egocentric Barton tweeted his sentiments by referring to suicide as a selfish act.  Widely criticized for his remarks, the QPR midfielder has refused to apologize, claiming people have not fully considered his views.  I am no fan of Barton or suicide, but some comments are just distasteful, inappropriate and better left unsaid. Read the full story with his exact quotes here.

Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas might find his job in jeopardy after his team failed to advance to the semifinals of the Carling Cup by losing to Liverpool yesterday.  The club’s recent free fall may tempt their trigger happy owner Roman Abromovich, to consider other managerial options.

Major League Soccer

DC United’s teen sensation Andy Najar will train with EPL’s Tottenham Hotspur for two weeks.  The 18 year-old Honduras International was voted the 2010 MLS Rookie of the Year and hopes the experience will allow him to take his game to the next level.

Another MLS player crossing the pond for some post-season training is Tim Ream of the NY Red Bulls. The 24 year old defender will spend a fortnight in England training with West Brom and Bolton.

La Liga

After only one league win in 13 attempts, Racing Santander manager Hector Cuper’s contract has been terminated.  The team has been treading water at the bottom of the standings all season.

Cristiano Ronaldo picked up a slight knock during Saturday’s 4-1 victory over Atletico Madrid, although the superstar continued to play the entire 90 minutes and managed to score two penalty goals. He reinjured himself in training this week and is doubtful to be fit for this weekend’s match against Sporting Gijon.

Barcelona put their weekend loss at Getafe behind them with a 4-0 home win over Rayo Vallecano, pulling them within three points of league leaders Real Madrid.  The Catalan club seem unstoppable when playing in front of their home fans at Camp Nou.

Serie A

Following his resignation as Italy’s Prime Minister earlier this month, Silvio Berlusconi has announced he will return to his role as President of AC Milan.  He stepped down as club president when he started his 3rd term as PM in 2008.

Juventus will gladly take a point to continue their unbeaten record after a thrilling 3-3 draw against Napoli. Read all the details in this match re-cap.

UEFA Europa League Tournament

Today, teams will  meet up for the penultimate round of the Europa League tournament, hoping to gain a slot in the final 32.  Some of the matches include Celtic v Atletico Madrid, Braga v Birmingham City and Stoke City v Dynamo.  See all the fixtures here.

Tottenham, who have had their best Premier League start in over 40 years, hope to secure a 2nd round berth at White Hart Lane today.  They meet PAOK and are the favorites.
