Daily Kick Around: Thursday Edition

Hello, hello, hello footy fans! I hope you are having a great Thursday. In today’s edition, we’ve got Kompany fearing a red-card tidal wave in England, Google possibly jumping in on bidding for rights to broadcast EPL games, MLS Super Draft (!!!) and much more! Check out your Thursday Daily Kick Around!

English Premier League

Now that the FA have rejected Manchester City’s appeal of a red card issued to their captain, Vincent Kompany, during the last Saturday match against Manchester United, Kompany is apparently trying to stir up fear within the hearts of players and fans alike in EPL. He took to his Facebook page after the decision was handed down and stated,

“I wonder if we are now going to see an unprecedented wave of red cards because we sanction ‘ifs’ and ‘maybes’? … Players and managers are starting to expect more sendings-off from referees and I think it’s for the wrong reasons.”

I agree, refs all over the world have had some pretty atrocious calls the past couple of years, but wow Kompany.

So, here’s two words you probably wouldn’t normally associate with the EPL title: Tottenham Hotspurs. That’s right. After their dominating win over Everton yesterday, the Spurs moved within three points of table leaders Manchester City. Interesting indeed.

Remember when we told you that Apple are looking to dip into the treasure that is the broadcasting rights of the EPL? Well, now Google are sniffing around the idea as well. Currently, there is no legal online streaming sites for English Premier League games, except the occasionally game on ESPN3. If Google or Apple throw their hats into the bidding race with ESPN, Sky Sports and al-Jazeera, it could change how the world gets to see their EPL games.

Major League Soccer
If you are an MLS fan like me, get excited because it’s Super Draft day!!! The festivities are already underway in Kansas City and you can watch the plot unfold on ESPN2. Our newest contributor, Liz, will bring you a recap as soon as the draft concludes, so check back with Aerys Soccer!

Also, MLS announced yesterday that it’s U.S. Open Cup competition is getting a little face lift for the next season. Changes include a new knockout-style for the tournament and all 16 U.S. based MLS teams will now compete.

La Liga
So, Barcelona is one of the greatest teams in the world, correct? However, they are always striving to be better and continue to stay on top. The best way to do that is bring in new talent and say ‘adios’ to those not really fitting the style of play. Or just players they need to let go to keep the finances in the black. The Bleacher Report’s Peter Webster takes a look at six players the catalans could stand to let go this month.

Every Wednesday, we cater to all our women readers who enjoy looking at attractive players with our Midweek Muscles feature. Today though, we’ll give the men readers  a little pick-me up. Ever wonder who are the hottest La Liga Wags? Apparently others did too and made this Top 10 list for you. You’re welcome, boys.

Serie A
Here’s a name making waves in Serie A that will make Americans happy: Michael Bradley. “General Bradley” as he is becoming known as in Italy, is currently with Chievo Verona and gaining more respect with each game he plays with the club. 24-year-old Bradley has quickly become a regular starter since joining the team and has apparently surprised most of the staff with how he’s adapted and learn the style of play. Way to go, Mikey!
