Incredible.
That’s the word I’d use to describe not only the game, but the atmosphere at Jeld Wen Filed as well last night as the LA Galaxy took on the Portland Timbers.
I came to Portland for the game and I was not disappointed. Gotta give props to Timbers Army, they were awesome! Anyone who watches MLS matches knows that the atmosphere here in Portland is one of the best in MLS. I admit, I was unsure what to expect from LA, however, I knew it would be a good game.
In their last two matches, LA beat Portland. But this was a home game for Portland, so anything could happen. Portland scored a goal very early on in the game; the third minute by Kris Boyd. I’m sure I wasn’t the only one thinking, here we go again. The fifteen minutes that followed were a little nervewrecking for us LA Galaxy fans. We were waiting, hoping for a goal. In the 19th minute. David Beckham answered our prayers.
Slightly exaggerating, of course, but David Beckham scored the first goal for LA. He scored from long distance. Five minutes later, Beckham put LA ahead, by scoring from a vintage Beckham free-kick. Three minutes later, LA was awarded a penalty and LA captain, Landon Donovan, stepped up to take it and scored. A minute later Robbie Keane scored, making it 4-1 LA. That’s 4 goals in 9 minutes for LA, all of them came from their DP’s. Kosuke Kimura scored for Portland and the score was 4-2 LA at HT.
The second half started a little slower. There were many chances for both teams, but neither side scored until the 64th minute, when Keane scored his second goal of the match. A few minutes later, Boyd scored again for Portland. That would be the last goal as LA went on to win 5-3. Both keepers had a busy night, Portland’s keeper made 5 saves, while Josh Saunders made 7 saves for LA.
After the game was over, LA fans couldn’t stop cheering. Not only were they cheering on their team, they also tried to get the Portland fans in on it, by chanting “F Seattle”.
Overall, it was a great win for LA, in a great atmosphere. If you ever have a chance to watch your team in Portland, do it! It’s definitely worth it, everyone here is very welcoming.
LA Galaxy is currently in fifth place, four points away from the final play-off spot. Next up for LA Galaxy is Vancouver Whitecaps on Wednesday (away) and Chivas USA on Saturday (home).
