AJ would be great in Pittsburgh. A trade with the Pirates is a win-win. Sure, the Yankees shed some salary with a player they can no longer utilize.
But it actually means more for the Pirates. Dejan Kovacevic (fantastic Pittsburgh writer) wrote a great article about how the Pirates finally seem to be willing to spend money, but target FAs don’t want to go there. A bigger problem might be convincing Andrew McCutchen to sign long-term. They need to make moves to get back into relevance, and they could surprise in an NL Central in flux. And they need to show FAs (and McCutchen) that they are willing to improve the ballclub by spending.
Plus, Burnett won’t face any kind of real pressure in Pittsburgh like he did in NY. I think he would thrive there. And those fans are so thirsty for a winner that they will love him if he does what he can do.
I hope this works out, for the sake of all parties involved.
