Andy Pettitte Testifies At The Roger Clemens Trial (Part 6)

Good morning. Once again, I am live blogging the live tweeting of Andy Pettitte’s testimony from the Roger Clemens perjury trial.

Just as in parts three, four and five, all timestamped tweets are from Jim Baumbach of Newsday. All other tweets from other reporters are labeled as such:

10:16AM
TJ Quinn ESPN: Curious now whether AUSA Durham will be more aggressive w Pettitte, or whether he’ll treat him sympathetically.

10:19AM Durham is up, begins with Clemens accomplishments and asking him about the merits of Hall of Fame. Is it goal of Clemens? “I’m sure it is.”

10:20AM
Quinn ESPN: Would PED use increase/decrease your chances of making HOF? “I’d say it would decrease my chances.”

10:20AM: Your use of HGH increased or decreased HOF chances? “I’d say say it’s decreased it. People will think I tried to cheat to get better.”

10:21AM
Quinn ESPN: Asking if Clemens is competitive player/person. “Yes.” Demand top performance? “Yes.” True in late 30s/40s? “Yes.”

10:23AM: How does Clemens intimidate hitters? Pitching in, “one might get away… you might get hit by a ball and usually doesn’t feel too good.”
10:23AM: Durham just asked if Pettitte ever witnessed Clemens ever throw a ball “at someone’s head?” Objection by defense, bench conference.

(Why yes, yes he did. Not sure how that matters in this trial though unless they want to say he had roid rage or something.)

Quinn ESPN: He ever throw at someone’s head? Objection. Sustained. But the answer is yes. You should see what he did to Mike Piazza’s helmet.

10:24AM
NYDNSportsITeam: Judge Walton says headhunter question was “totally irrelevant” and tells jurors to disregard it.

10:24AM: Did Clemens have strong will? “Yes.” Did Clemens speak his mind? “Yeah.” Willing to stand up for himself? “Sure.”

10:25AM
Quinn ESPN: Asking about four photos defense showed of #Clemens’ body over the years. Pettitte had said there was no difference in them.

10:26AM: Easier or harder to play game at 39? Harder, Pettitte says. Durham trying to allude to possible motive for Clemens to dope.
10:26AM: Clemens “pays attention to detail as far as taking care of himself,” Pettitte says.

10:27AM
Quinn ESPN: Interesting idea Durham seems to be introducing: lack of change in body might suggest #Clemens needed help to stay in that shape.

10:27AM: Pettitte just referred to conversation “I thought I had” with Clemens about HGH in 1999 or 2000.

10:28AM Why didn’t you have a followup conversation with Clemens about HGH before you decided to use it? “I didn’t even think about it.”
10:28AM: Why not tell Clemens you used HGH? “I don’t even really know,” Pettitte said.
10:28AM: Pettitte reiterates he never heard of HGH before conversation with Clemens in 1999 or 2000.

10:30AM: Do you remember that conversation from 1999 or 2000 “as you described it?” Durham asks. “Yes,” Pettitte says.

10:31AM: You take mental note of that conversation of then? “Yes,” Pettitte said. Why? “I just know when I spoke to Mac about it he got very upset.”
10:31AM: Pettitte says he can’t remember any other specific conversation he had with Clemens with 1999 or 2000 except the one about HGH.

10:31AM
Quinn ESPN: Did you make a mental note of that conversation? “Yes.” Why? “Because Mac got very upset about it.” WHOOPS. Not supposed to mention Mac.

10:32AM
Quinn ESPN: Durham immediately cut Pettitte off. Pettitte is barred from talking about getting HGH from McNamee.

10:33AM
Quinn ESPN: Defense didn’t object. Smart. That would have drawn attention to the comment.

10:34AM: Now to 2005 conversation, “just went to Roger. I was concerned if media asked me what I was going to say.”
10:34AM: “I asked him what he was going to say. He told me I misunderstood him, that he told me Debbie had taken it.”
10:34AM: Had he told you that in 1999? “I didn’t think so.”

10:35AM
NYDNSportsITeam: Pettitte answer veered into matters that Walton had ruled inadmissible, and prosecutor Butler cut him off. No mistrial for now.

(Another delay?)

10:36AM
Quinn ESPN: Pettitte asked whether he had been told it was Debbie, not Roger, who took HGH in 99/00. “I didn’t think so.”

(Sure, pin it on the wife…)

10:38AM: Pettitte agrees never received a B12 injection from McNamee and never asked for one from him. “He wasn’t someone who would do a B12 shot.”

10:39AM: Did you have ever the athletic trainer or doctor come to your house to give you B12 shots? No. Would that have been unusual? Yes.

10:39AM
Quinn ESPN: Ever see Clemens get a B12 shot? “I might have.” In trainer’s room. Would staff come to your house to do it? No. “That would be unusual.”

10:40AM: Pettitte says he never received or asked for pain shot from McNamee. Why “With the Yankees we would have access to that,” Pettitte says.

10:40AM
NYDNSportsITeam: Pettitte is asked why he didn’t get pain medicine injections from McNamee. Pettitte: “With the Yankees, he wouldn’t have access to that.”

10:41AM: Durham asked if he ever hit a home run? “Yes.” Remember the pitcher you hit it from? “Yes.” Who? “Chan Ho Park.” And Durham is done on that.

(Oh right, because PED’s make you hit home runs. Yeeeah.)

10:42AM: As attorneys meet with judge, Pettitte signals to lawyer, asking if he’s done. Not quite yet, he’s told, and he responds as you’d think.

(Did he sigh? Roll his eyes? Shake his head? Cry out “Noooooooooo!!!”)

10:43AM
NYDNSportsITeam: “Mr. Pettitte, thank you for your time, good luck with this season,” Durham says. But Pettitte is still here. Another bench conference.

Quinn ESPN: Here’s where Clemens is vulnerable: Pettitte: HGH convo was 99/00. But Debbie’s shot in ’03, and Pettitte says there were no other convos. So when would Clemens have told Pettitte that Debbie got the shot?

10:45AM: Durham recovers some by getting Pettitte to agree he recalls none of other 1000 chats he had with Clemens in 99/00. But will jury agree?

10:46AM
Quinn ESPN: Pettitte is still up there while there’s another conference. Should be wearing a jacket over his left arm.

10:48AM: Judge asks if during 99/00 conversation about HGH did Clemens mention Brian McNamee’s name? “No, sir,” Pettitte said.
10:48AM: Judge also asks if Pettitte remembers needle for B12 shot? Pettitte says no, but he knows it’s longer than needle for HGH.

(I really wish Judge Walton’s name was John so I could make John Boy jokes. Oh well. Such is life.)

10:49AM: Judge tells jury that when Pettitte said McNamee was angry about 99/00 Clemens-Pettitte chat about HGH, that’s “not relevant to this case.”

10:49AM
Quinn ESPN: Wow: Judge says juror had q about what McNamee’s repsonse was to Pettitte when he asked him about HGH/Clemens. Judge says not relevant.

10:50AM: Pettitte is done.

Pettitte has left the courtroom.
